Absolute best base truck for pullin is a 12V extended cab long bed. Longer the wheelbase, seems the better they do. Then go spend a bunch of money at Schieds.
If you don't want to change cams right away, I've heard 97 12V's had the best cam profile, stick trucks of course, don't even think about an automatic. ATS's truck lunched a tranny last week in Eaton.

Don't know how much it would cost to convert to 4WD, but that sounds like it would be an excellent base truck.

Shouldn't be too bad to change over to 4wd. Do yourself a favor and find a D70 or better front end, get your welder out and start welding brackets on there and sling that front end under there. Go with a heavy transfer case too, something gear driven out of a 6X6, that'll get you halfway there. Then you need some kind of a rear axle out of something big, then you might as well take the tranny out of the same truck. Basically all you're gonna have left is the frame/body and CTD from your dodge.
