Manual Transmissions, what gear to pull in?

I'm just curious as to what gear most of you guys pull sleds in?

What kind of clutches do well for sled pulling and STREET use?

I'm real new to this, but definately wanna go out and have some fun. I'd just like to do it somewhat educated so I don't break AS much stuff.

check www.southbendclutch.com if you want a great sledpulling clutch.
I use the 12cb 3850.

4th gear lo is a good gear to run in the 400hp to 500hp area. 2nd hi range is good for 500hp and up. 5th lo is good for the 550hp and up crew.

Where could I get a good deal on one of those clutches? Hydraulic upgrade required? Total cost?

I'm still in the planning stages, but I want to get the right clutch the first time.

Just deal with them direct.
Hydraulic upgrade is about 200 bones but it is needed.

So your looking right around 2k for the package give or take some pesos.

Thanks for the help on that. I'm only gonna take my truck to about the 450 to 500 hp range. A turbo and a couple of boxes.

See if this seems right.

Factory truck with 300-350 hp, 4lo 3rd in a 3.55 geared truck maybe 4lo 4th in a 4.10 geared truck?

Both trucks would have 33x12.50s, sled weighs 7500lbs.Just farm stock at the local fair.

"Timinva" can hook you up on the South Bend and install it to if you want. You can shoot him a pm or goto trediesel.com .

He's in VA Beach. That's where I went to get mine done. Hate you weren't able to make the Jax dyno trip. Tim was down there for that event. You'll probably have to do an overnight to do it, but Tim will drop you off and pick you up at the hotel. He'll sell you the clutch at a very fair price and you could find someone around G'boro to do I'm sure, but I learned a ton that trip from Tim. He'll also help you blueprint you plan for your horsepower goals. He can help you with some of that stuff too. His # is 757-831-7451. Tell him you know John P and me (Matt), he'll take care of you. Get more clutch than you think you'll need.....well, think out your goals carefully. I'm pretty close to the limit of my South Bend now. I maybe should have gotten a double disk. You can always call Peter at South Bend to recommend a clutch to you. I talked to Peter and he recommended based on what I told him, but I underestimated my power goals....

Good luck, Matt

you must use a much lighter sled than what i have pulled, direct as in 1 to 1 at 500 rwhp didn't pull worth a dime when i tried it with a sled that weighs 44k. i went back to 4th gear [with a 6 speed] and got 3rd place next night. if in doubt, use a lower gear.
