Can you be competitive in a sled pull with a manual?

Hey guys,
I'm having a disagreement with a kid I know that thinks he is going to be WINNING a sled pull with a 6 speed. I know it can do it, but is it very likely that he will stand a chance against guys with built autos? I don't think so. He said where he was going to pull there wasn't different classes for autos and manuals... So I figure he doesn't stand a chance. What do you think?

Jason

If he has a stock or single disc clutch, no he doesnt since he will more then likely toast his clutch. If he gets a dd then it would depend on the track, his truck, traction sled wieght etc.

Most of the more competitive pullin trucks are sticks, unless its a Dmax.

Well what mods does he have. Most guys with built autos have some good horsepower out of them thats why they got a built auto. If he goes in there with a fairly stock clutch and truck he's gonna get spanked and then smoke the clutch. But two identical trucks one with a built auto and one with a good DD clutch my money is on the stick with the DD. Theres alot of advantages running a manual but I'm sure some with disagree.

Hes got a dual disk, intake, exhaust, meth injection, and a smarty. I thought most pulling trucks were autos...

Manual or Auto are both very competitive in pulling...

Right now the top trucks in the street class are Auto's.

Yeah the Dmax's are running away from us in the street classes.

Like others have said with a dd clutch he stands a better chance in my opinion. There are a few trucks pullin around here with built autos that don't do as well as the manuals. Most trucks I have seen personly pull better are sticks. Thats why I'm converting mine to a stick.

I think with a manual you have more of a gear selection than a auto. depending on the track you can come off in third or fourth while a auto you most likely will on hit 2nd lockup

Around here the auto's seem to be more consistant but driver experience and other variables on how the truck is setup is going to make a big difference. If he's got a hundred hp more than anybody else and he can put it to the ground it won't matter what transmission he has but with everything else equal I'd go with an auto. With an auto you can run through the gears to get the highest ground speed you can and then downshift at the end of the track when the sled gets heavy.

I do think a well built auto will have a advantage in a sled pull, especially with a unexperianced driver. But anyone can put it in drive and push the petal.
But if you have enough power you don't need to downshift when the sled gets heavy, its as simple as that

I have a 6sp and i was told to put in 4th in 4low rev it up to about 2100 then start lettin the clutch out until it starts to grab then ease your foot into it. The guy told me you could somtimes pull in 5th depending on the track conditions.

on what clutch? Stock or single disk is just throwing your money away, If you have a D/D clutch, WFO is the only way

I've pulled in Pa., W.V. & have seen first hand the advantages of a auto. I outpowered some of the guys with the D-max trucks, but sure enough they pulled real close to me every time. I've never seen a auto win any of the pulls out my way, but it is because the manual guys have way more mods & we pull in high gears. I pull for fun, but still grind my teeth every time that I see a well built auto pulling after me.
