Big Rigs Talk about other Cummins powered vehicles here. As a matter of fact, it doesn't even have to be Cummins, but it will be diesel! :)

Need help with an N-14

My neighbor has a mid 90s White/GMC, looks like a Volvo. Has an N-14 and has been sitting about a year. We charged the batteries, and we are cranking but we have no power at the shutoff solenoid. We checked the fuses in the cab but that's about as far as we got. What should I look for? If I removed the wire going to the solenoid and run 12v to it would that let it start or does the computer need a signal from it?

Is the connection at the shutdown solenoid clean? The way the wire is routed on the engine expose it to constant heat soaking, so if all the fuses are good trace the wire back into the main harness looking for a short or open. You can jump a hot wire from the starter to the shutdown solenoid to give you the 12v needed to start the engine. You can leave the factory wire on or off to jump power to it.

I tried to probe the wire back to where it runs into the injector harness. I was worried about backfeeding into the computer, but I should be OK when I remove the original wire and run a temporary 12v source to the solenoid. Thanks for the advice.

There should only be one wire on the shut off solenoid. It should be tied to a hot key on source only. It is not slaved to the ecm on an N-14. Just put a 12v hot to it and crank the engine over and see if it will start. The solenoid wire is routed with the injector harness but is separate and not tied into it.
