Sorry I forgot about the 20 different ways to screw up a good (3406) engine before the killer C15. On another note look closely and in some 3406E engines you can see the Detroit Diesel logo on your genuine CAT injectors. My money is on a 270HP 1674 in his 1974.

QUOTE The predecessor is the 3408 natural - was bulletproof and the choice among boat and truck builders. Some time in the 80's they went to turbocharging and it became a throwaway engine, meaning it didn't last as long. Then came the wave of 6 cyl engines. Are you thinking about 3208's ? They were an automotive type block. All of the 3408's had liners. 3208's were NA and turbo'd. Low that I recall was 180hp. Turbo'd was 425 in marine use.

old 988a's,824's,834's used the 1674 also I never realized it was put out for a truck motor. I plumbed one up for a jaw moter on a 54" crusher. it would chomp rock!
figgered it was just a detuned 1693 for heavy equipment.

I hate to hijack this thread but I'd like to thank guys like you. I'm a 2nd year heavy equipment tech apprentice and I love it when a veteran in the trade gives me info and tricks on how to do stuff. My foreman does that a lot with me. I try and be like a sponge, soak up all the info that comes out of him no matter how relavent it is or isn't.

Didn't know the 1693s had an overhead cam. When did the 3406 A models come into existance, wasn't it somewhere about that time? I've had a 77 KW with a shiny 290 in it, and a 77 with a 3408 in it. Is it turbocharged? Air to Air? Air to water? I've "heard" of some 1693s with twin turbos but probably rumors.
