Turbo time
Turbo time
Well I've had enough of playing with a stock turbo and its time to upgrade since the stocker is:
A) Way, way too small, I really have to keep my foot out of it and watch my EGTs, even with my programmer on a mild program.
B) Its got 282,000kms on it and has a fair bit of play, last thing I need is it grenading under full load and destroying my engine
So with that said, I've been thinking of putting a 64/71/14 variant on but I'm not totally sure on what would be best. I don't claim to be a turbo guru like some of you fellas so I don't want to drop $1500+ and have my truck run like a bag of crap.
I mostly use the truck as a daily driver and hauling toys. In the winter I usually have a sled deck on with 2 sleds+gear. So I need it to be streetable and fairly responsive. I do realize that I'm gonna have to give up some response time in order to move more air. I've read that 3rd gens spool faster than a 12v or 24v truck. Whats the reasoning behind this? Extra injection events?
Right now I have a diablosport predator programmer, Dr.Performance race pressure box, AFE intake and 4" exhaust. Other than that the truck is stock. I'm going to put a pusher pump and 2 micron setup in too. Along with a new exhaust manifold while I'm doing the turbo.
Thoughts?

From my limited experience, I'd say a 64/71 is one of the best single turbos out there. I found it to boost up quicker than my 62/71, and Jason seems to like it better than his 62/65, much smoother, less surge/bark. Granted, these are dinosaur trucks, but your CR will make it even easier to drive with.
Tate speaks the truth. I have a loaner turbo on the 12V from Tate while my other one is in at Alamo getting re-freshed. The old turbo I have is a 62/12/65 (0.7 A/R) and its a reasonable upgrade for the 350 hp club I would bet. But now running a 64/14/71 that Tate has its a way better fit for me. Its not a slug like so many report and spools better than my 62. Also lots of top end flow that I need.
So, on that note, now that Tate soured the water.. Anyone want a 62/12/65 just out of the rebuild shop? Now that I have run this one, I have to save the money to get a replacement.

When my truck was much closer to stock I ran a silver bullet 66 on it.. I was very happy with that turbo, the only complaint I ever had with that turbo was when I was towing heavy (15k +) it would surge at 1800 rpm,, but not if I was towing lighter. So in my opinion a 64 would be the idle turbo on a 3rd gen.. best of all worlds imho
There are so many combinations out there its hard to get your head around it. I don't know what the stocker HX35 is, 57/12/58-60 ???
The only numbers you will typically find cast on a turbo would be the A/R on the compressor (only on some models) and turbine housings. Garrett's and S-series Borg Warners use A/R ratios. Holset and K-Series BW's use square cm's.

Thanks for the input guys. With the truck almost paid off, I figure I'd treat myself and put a few bucks into it and fix a few things that I've been putting off for a while.
I'm looking at a new exhaust system too. My dual 4" setup is lop sided, cracked and it looks like Ray Charles tried welding the joints. From the few turbos I've looked at it seems I'm going to need an HX-40 downpipe (according to the turbo manufacturer). I can't just buy a 4" turbo back system (like the AFE setup I looked at today) and have it mount fine with the new turbo without hacking it up? Its not that I can't do it I just don't want to buy a bunch of goodies and have them not jive nicely and then spend more time messing around trying to make it fit right.

The 4" downpipe can usually be had from the same manufacturer of the system, IE. MBRP. The down pipe just replaces the one in the kit for the OEM fit piece. I've had to add an extender piece, but thats for a much older truck.
I would suggest, for the cost, the BD Super B Special,Tates loaner I am using is that and it works great!

Kevin, I would appreciate that a ton! I'll have to buy you a beer or two!
I'll have a look at the BD Super B Special. I've looked at the Industrial Injection super phatshaft 64/71 and the ATS Aurora 4000 (supposed to be a 63/71/14 and it has a Titanium compressor wheel too, which is pretty cool I think
)

I just found the BD to be the best deal so far. The HTT is just plain stupid for price. I wouldn't have been too sold on the BD until I ran it myself and I know Greenworks had one in his 475hp 02 before he sold the truck. If you get the BD, it ships through Canada too IIRC ordering from either BD or PEAK.
