On the Dyno Today...

So now that RV season is pretty much over, I've had the itch to re-dyno my truck.
I bumped up my Smarty to TNT a couple weeks ago & have been running those settings, slowly working up in levels & "road tuning".

So I spent just over an hour on the Mustang Dyno at DPS here in Calgary.
The dyno's inertia brake is really strong. It could stall my truck if the operator (Randy) wanted. It loaded my truck more than any dyno that I've ever been on.
Plus the drums have huge sharp 1" x 1" grooves cut into them.
Way more aggressive than some simple knurled drums.

I did about a dozen pulls. Slowly worked up the Smarty levels, tried a few tuning options, even pinched off the wastegate hose to see if that helped.

I'm quite happy with the results: 560RWHP, 1155RWTQ. (corrected values.)
This was with level 7 TNT, all default settings.

Peak boost was a bit low, 48-50PSI while I can get it to 55 on the street in a hard 6th gear pull. Pinching off the wastegate hose gave me 55PSI but no gain in power.
Peak EGT's were 1200. Still very mild, the truck runs cool as a cucumber even on the highest TNT settings.
From about 1/2 throttle up, I have ZERO smoke. I could easily use more fuel. My small 50HP injectors are great on the street & while towing but are holding me back.
Jamie's 90HP nozzles would be a nice upgrade!

All in all, it's a nice running street truck, which was pretty much my goal. No engine upgrades planned at all.

I had trouble getting a good scan of the graph since it's pink & light blue.
The torque curve looks like a spike but the TQ scale on the left of the graph is really expanded. It goes from 600- 1279 on the left side of graph.
By "active wastegate" written on the graph, I mean the wastegate hose was NOT pinched off.

Joe, if your looking for more power, the SSR is a nice upgrade. We have had pretty decent success running it. Congrats on getting some decent numbers.

Good looking graph's, can you post the one where the wastegate line is pinched off I am curious to see the difference in the curves.

As has been said a 560whp tow rig, is a beautiful thing.

Great number's Joe! That is generally where I would like to end up some day. No smoke, ability to pull heavy and be a DD, respectable street power, low EGT's and reliable. You make it look easy....

What kind of EGT's do you hit when you are pulling the trailer around the mountains? 1200 would be the most I want to see when I am done, hopefully even just a bit lower in the 1100's for peak EGT's.
How is the bottom end smoke?

Nice Joe. I like the peak torque near the 2500 RPM mark.. For towing you get max power without having to bag the engine at WOT.

Now thats a diesel dyno!

Thanks guys... I'm pretty happy!

The dyno at DPS is $126/hr + GST. Compare that to $75-$100 for 2 or 3 pulls at a Dyno GTG.
In fact a dyno GTG at DPS would be my recommendation.
The dyno was excellent, deadly consistent. No fuss, no drama.
Strap it down & start making runs. There was no tach hookup though.
The usual procedure of calibrate 2000rpm in the gear you want to pull in.

- those are pre-turbo EGT's & my pyro is working properly!
- I did try TNT level 9, made 10 peak HP less than level 7. .

I've been getting up to speed on the SSR & it does have potential. As Brett said earlier it's a huge step up from the previous Smarty.
I still think that all the box tuners including the SSR are going to have to really improve their tunes or fail to exist now that their tunes can be analyzed using EFI Live.

Lol, I know but a 600WHP tow rig would be even more beautiful !!

I do have those graphs, I'll look at them & post them if they are significantly different. The wastegate on my ATS twins is different than most other setup.
It uses the output of the bottom (primary) turbo (essentially total boost) to control the wastegate in the top (secondary) turbo.

Thanks Darrell, anything but easy though! Reliable power is my #1 goal.

I towed all summer in Revo non-TNT level 7 which is a 130HP level.
This level dyno'ed 450RWHP last fall on the Lightspeed Red Deer Mustang dyno.

This current dyno was with Revo TNT level 7 which is a 200HP level.
I've never towed with TNT.

With Revo non-TNT level 7 my EGT's all summer were less than 1100 & it was hard to get it up there. That's hot summer in the B.C. mountains with our 10K lb 5th wheel.
Since my truck is a manual trans I can always get it to smoke a ton if I lug it a bit, but driven conservatively, very little smoke even with the trailer on.

In fact I think the latest TNT tunes smoke less than my older tunes.
Currently I can easily drive it with virtually no smoke.

My current plan is to leave it in TNT level 7 & dial it back when towing using the POD function of the Smarty.

Once my twins are finished I guess it will be time to cross over to the Smarty. I think the EFI will be a long time coming for the 03's
I really like how everything is working on your truck!

I didn't know you were considering, as I just sold an SSR a few weeks ago.

There are quite a few used Smarty S06 POD's floating around for good prices but if you are purchasing your 1st Smarty, I and likely many others would recommend the latest SSR model.

I'm keeping my eyes open for a good deal on a used SSR but not too many of those out there yet.

This just applies to 03-05 trucks.
06-07 5.9L should go directly to EFI Live..
