Cracks in rim

Was doing my winter inspection this weekend...Good thing I notice this..This could of been a disaster waiting to happen...About 4 years ago I bought a used set of 16 inch Moto Metal aluminum rims. They where perfect at the time..But found one front rim with 8 cracks running towards the centre of the hub, right where the lug nut go..

I always used a torque wrench on the lugs and torque them to 120 foot lbs..I'm going to remove the rears and check them also..Now I don't trust these rims...Maybe should replace them all.. Or buy a replacement rim? I haven't priced out a rim in Calgary, but by other Alberta posts, maybe I should order a rim from the US...Seems Mr Wheel Deal is the one to use..

What to do... Anyone see cracks like this in aluminum rims??

You been torquing light too Dave, should be 135-145 on our trucks, imagine what thecracks would look like at that . I never had any cracks show up on either set of rims on the '96 and nothing on the '03 as of yet.

Darn...That what the tire shop told me to torque at,because they are tapered rim.....

Dam this Dodge...

Maybe forced to buy all new rims......Looking at the Mr wheeldeal website..

If I decide not to burn my truck....What rims would look good on my truck??? Alot of choices out there..

cracks in aluminum rims is a common problem. of course I';m not saying every aluminum rim will crack, but its known to happen on some. Glad to catch it now and not when your in the ditch though right. If it was actually a serious problem, they wouldn't make them for highway tractors 'eh. But I believe the cheap cast aluminum aftermarket junk is way more prone than quality forged rims.

Thanks Luke...I was taking to Deweiler and I think the best thing to do is go with a steel rim..There are some nice chrome steel rims for the duallies.Dave gave me a contact down in the US,the same place he got his rims...

Every dually rim I've seen has the unilug nuts (attached washer), or like the older chev's, had the plate between the tapered nuts and rim.

As for a good set of dually rims, its hard to go wrong with Alcoa's. Been doing it for years, quality stuff.

I also went through 2 complete sets of my moto metal skull rims. Both sets were covered by warranty. All 8 of my rims cracked way out by the "eyes" and through the nose of the rims. Now on a set of fuel rims......

This was a unexpected expense...I'm not even going to price out anything in Alberta...I'm checking the websites the other guys gave me out of the US..I should have a winter and summer set of rims and tires...Thinking of swapping my tires back on the steel rims and buying a summer set...Joy of a dually...12 tires and rims...

For the amount you drive your truck Dave a good set of a mixed terrain type tire is all you need, why go to all of the extra expense of two sets? Heck it's not like you go off-road with it so even a decent set of road tires will do, since it is 4x4.

Seen a few complaints on the web of those type of rims cracking...Was it the front rims that where cracking mostly??

Was looking at the Vision Crazy Eightz rims...But there is hardly no meat on the front rims...Did a search and couldn't find any Vision rim problems...

Dave, it did not seem to matter, front or back. They all cracked. Was not overly diligent on rotating either.....
