Computer Nerds

For you geeks out there, I could use some technical assistance. A couple months ago, my wireless router decided to quit working properly. I had local network access (no other computers here, just my laptop). I tried reconfiguring it, but never got beyond local only access, no internet. I've been plugging in directly to my cable modem (Shaw). Swapped cables around, they seem to work fine. Fast forward to this weekend, I finished up in Edmonton, and I brought my other wireless router home from my cousins place to try. I've been using it for almost a year with no issues. I bring it home, plug it into my my modem, and I get local access only again. Still using the same cable from modem to router as I use to plug my computer into the modem. I tried resetting my router, and it wouldn't even get that far, fails for some reason. So, two routers, both worked fine, and the newer one I know worked as of Sat morning. Could my modem be an issue with the routers even though when I plug it directly into my computer its works just fine?

Sounds like an issue with your laptop. You may need to remove the drivers for your wireless card, then re install them. Then go through all the settings for the wireless nic. Something there is blocking the internet. The laptop uses seperate properties for each nic

Hey Now Nerds have Feelins Give Me a quick call I will Pm my number to ya

Try power cycling the modem
Power cycle the Router
Depending on which Os you run, it some times can be a pain in the Butt switching between wireless Networks and even wired Networks . I will assume you are running Vista or 7. try after doing the power cycles to do a repair on the network

do you have dsl? they like to configure their modems with same ip address as most common wireless routers, therefore they will not communicate with each other. had the exact same problem with my sisters verizon dsl modem and your standard linksys wap54g2 router

your modem is probably set to 192.168.1.1, try to google how to reset your modem to a different ip address to maybe 192.168.2.1

if its linksys you will simply type the ip address of the router into your browser to get to your configuration settings

He is on a local cable company . The routers some time act up when they are moved . They Are Kinda locked into a network and takes some time for them to flush and reconnect usually a few power cycles do the trick and repairing the Local area connection on the computer , the laptops also get a tad confused from all the wireless connections these guys see if they are jumping from hotel to hotel

Edit :

Any other devices in the house that can see the network? (blackberry wifi, Wii, neighbors computer...) Just wondering if the routers are transmitting a wireless signal or not.

I'll see if I can run through the questions here.

Kev, would the computer be blocking wireless internet only at my house? No issues at my cousins place, no issues when I was in Stettler on the public network there. I could join the other unsecured network in Devon with no issues, was just slow.

I've power cycled the modem and routers several times. This issue popped up one day when I went from upstairs to the main floor, and it went from internet to local only. I am running Vista (boo!), never had too many issues switching before.

I've got my Ipod touch that will recognize the network, but can't join it either. Thats the other reason I believe its not the computer.

i still think its this: they like to configure their modems with same ip address as most common wireless routers, therefore they will not communicate with each other. had the exact same problem with my sisters verizon dsl modem and your standard linksys wap54g2 router

if you were moving the router, it may have reset to factory defaults and this can happen, does your computer actually "see" the wireless router but wont give you internet connection?

Yea, my first router gave up back in April or so. I went to Devon where my other router had been for sometime. No issues. I then went to Stettler using the motel internet, no issues there. Came home, tried using the router again, still no dice. Start plugging directly into the modem. Back to Devon again, on my other router, used it for two months just fine. When I finished working there, I brought home that router. I tried plugging that into the modem. I could connect to the network, just no internet. This one wouldn't reconfigure for some reason though.

yes your symptons sound like exactly what i am thinking. the modem where you are having problems is set to a popular ip address that most linksys and netgear etc... type routers use, if your router and modem have the same ip address they cannot communicate, you will need to enter the diagnostics for the router and change it to a new ip address. what kind of modem and wireless router do you have? also, you say you can connect fine to the wireless router but not get internet... this confirms to me what your problem is. this is a popular problem ive had to fix this myself a handful of times for friends, etc... your original wireless router may not have even needed replacement.

i dont understand what you mean? "Yea, my first router gave up back in April or so. I went to Devon where my other router had been for sometime. No issues. I then went to Stettler using the motel internet, no issues there. Came home, tried using the router again, still no dice."
so you went to your other house where you have a working router!? and took that router with you to stettler and used the motel wireless on your laptop? then you went home with the router you took from devon and plugged it in and could connect to the router wireless but not get internet!?

Did you register the routers mac address with your ISP?
