Common Rail Compression Tester

With a couple of Common rails having to be rebuilt in Cgy lately, I would like to buy a compression tester (adapter and gauge) but I can't seem to find the right adapter.

Snap-on has the 800 psi compression gauge: http://buy1.snapon.com/products/diagnostics/mt33c.asp

But I don't see a CR compression adapter anywhere on the site.

This is the only close one:
http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item....re&dir=catalog

I actually don't see any Common rail tools on the Snap-on website at all.

The Miller/SPX website is terrible... I can't find any CR tools on there neither.
Hopefully Rob had better luck...

Any other ideas on where to find a CR compression gauge kit?

I've asked my snap-on guy about this recently actually. what I understand is the 24v compression tester works for both ISB and HPCR engines.

the one you pictured is a 12v tester.

ISB injectors go into ISBe heads, so it makes sense that the compression tester would be the same.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I don't see a 24V compression adapter on the Snap-on website either. There are 3 adapters:

Luke, if you are going to buy the adapter and/or gauge let me know. I'm not sure what your work tools arrangement is but I'm in for both if the local prices are reasonable.
Perhaps it will be cheaper for us both if you order 2 kits? It will definitely be easier for Snap-on.
I live in the SE, just minutes from your Waterous shop.

I used to buy Snap-On stuff over the counter at their Foothills SE warehouse, but lately just deal with a mobile Snap-on guy who's territory is the Foothills SE area.
Nice guy & he comes right to my house. Don't buy much anymore as I no longer work in the field & don't have a tool expense account at work anymore.

its in the paper catalougue. I'm sure I've looked it up before. I'll double check and get the part number. I was very close to pulling the trigger on a compression tester guage and a couple adapters. like a VW and a cummins. I just haven't yet. I have to pay out some other stuff 1st.

Finally found it... It's not in the same category as the other Cummins compression adapters...

ISB/ISBE compression adapter:
http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item....&group_ID=1430

Compression gauge:
http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item....&group_ID=1429

800 PSI compression gauge: p/n MT33C US$200
ISB/ISBE compressions adapter: p/n EEPV313A US$100

I'll phone the Snap-on guy I deal with tomorrow to check local prices.
It will be pricey, but I wouldn't mind baselining my truck when I pull the top end apart this spring.

edit: I found the Snap-on Canadian prices on the "Canadian" Snap-on website which is another joy to use.

These tools list for Canadian $250 & $150 respectively.
If I recall, the Snap-on guy I deal with goes strictly by the prices on the Snap-on Canadian website.

That looks like a good set for the 12v crowd. Has the timing kit for the p-pump, and the special 'crescent' wrench for loosening the bolts on the VE pump. $500 seems pretty good for that set, actually.

I was thinking you could get that set and then just the adapter for the correct injector adapter.

That is a good 12V kit.. I see now even closer it has the dial adapter for the VE pump. Rob might like this kit..

I have that kit-its original purpose was serving the rotary pump 12 valves. You can add the other stuff as required. Think I paid $500 for mine too-lots of the tools in the kit weren't even used yet.

Princess Auto has a Compression tester for under $200, it has the ISB adaptor also. Might be worth looking at.

Thanks for the info but I cannot find any diesel stuff on the Princess Auto website. Just gasser compression testers to 300 PSI.
I'm not a fan of the offshore Princess Auto stuff anyway.

I called the mobile Snap-on dealer, just waiting for him to get back to me with a price.

Luke, any chance you can get a price from your Snap-on dealer?

I have fought to find a good compression tester or 24 valves, common rail or vp. What I have found is, the same adaptor fits both engines, the princess auto kit doesn't have a check valve in the adaptor, wich means your guage jumps up and then back to near zero when your cranking, seams inaccorate, i know someone at the shop talked to the snap on guy and i think his tool was the same way, so check that out befor you buy one. I have been just useing the adaptor as a leakdown tester kinda. I just bring the cyl i'm checking to tdc, loosen the rockers if there down and apply shop air, listen to intake, exhuast, and oil fill hole for air. If you find a good working compresstion tester I would like the part numbers please. I have heard cummins has no spec for compresstion, they just have a spec for crankcase pressure to tell if a engine is dusted i guess.

Rageblue, thanks for the info.

The Snap-on p/n's & links are in my previous post. The Snap-on gauge does have a push button relief valve. I've never seen a compression gauge without one.
Plus for US$200 it must be decent quality.

The Snap-on guy got back to me. His prices are exactly the same as the Canadian Snap-on website. C$250 for the gauge, C$150 for the adapter.

Hopefully Luke can get a better price, especially if we both buy a kit.
