Broken Cam?

On the way in to NAIT this am, horrible noise from the front end. Truck dies. I got it dragged to GCL diesel (Edmonton). Preliminary estimate is a broken cam. 4 hours to do a proper estimate. Given it is a 94, not sure how much I should be willing to put into the truck... Any suggestions or estimates? Given the rest of the truck is fair, what would the "scrap" value be? Best place to sell if I go that route?

It is going to be expensive for them to do the work. That truck in running condition, is going to worth somewheres around the 4k mark I would think.. Maybe give a list of what the truck is,, ie: options, cab configuration, box length, auto/std etc.. the more info the better we can help out

Ugh.

Well... pretty plain jane truck. Options are air, and cruise. standard. Interior pretty good for the year. Cancer on front fenders. Cancer on rocker panel, driver side. reg. cab long box. Box is well used.

About all I can tell you. Good truck prior to this. No death wobbles, etc. Maintenance was done... Not that it means much now...

If you were able to do the work yourself it would probably be worthwhile to fix,, but to pay a shop it would be pretty tense.. Truck is probably worth 3 to 4 running

You'd probably pay that much to the shop to get it running again. I think book rate is 12 hours on a cam change, and thats assuming its in one piece. if its more, then you'll want to drop the pan and make sure all the parts come out. They might pull the head to check for piston/valve contact.

A used engine would be cheaper than fixing the old one if thats the case.

Ok. Found the problem. An odd one...

The gear on the end of the crank has sheared the key. This blew the timing out, and since no gears were turning, the cam wasn't turning. We'll determine damage tomorrow...

So... I'll probably be looking for a different truck sometime in the nearish future... Oh well...

Being a 94, it has a p-pump. There is always people looking to buy the injection pump, lines, gear case/cover. Might break even part it out, just an idea.

Good idea.. The tranny alone would be worth $500 never mind the block.. I would think it kissed a couple valves with the cam stalled. So re-doing the head at a minimum with push rods and possible piston damage.

Are they sure it wasn't the kdp that caused the problem?

Take some pictures of the truck and list the options on it. I might interested in a parts truck. I also have a few spare engines available if you need. I'm starting to collect little parts for my fun/play truck build, so a good parts truck would come in real handy.

Got the estimate. Truck will be parted out. Guarenteed not the KDP. KDP was still in place. Cam is broken as well. One of the gears between crank and cam has tooth damage. This is in addition to the sheared key on the crank. No reason can be found for this. I won't have the time to deal with parting the truck until after school is finished (another 6 weeks), so... it will be available as a parts truck to reasonable offers. Otherwise, I'll wait till I can strip the parts...

I'll try to get pics sometime next week (probably not till friday) for those interested in the truck. It will be located at the GCL yard till I can get to it.

It is NOT the mexican block...

What is it? A 3/4 regular cab, 5 speed truck? I'm interested in the complete truck if you want to unload it. No part out required.
