Joining 4th gen crowd in a week
hey guys, i just sold my 2001 2nd gen 6 spd cummins last night, buying a 2010 crew laramie next weekend. Just looking for any info on them that would be new to me as far as going from an 01 to a 2010
My new truck does have the 68RFE trans which is a whole new game to me beings ive owned a manual 6 spd cummins only. What can you tell me about this trans and how do they hold up/life expectancy etc. Truck has just a tidge over 120k miles, more than i originally wanted but this truck has the options i was looking for and met my price criteria. Just hoping i dont end up buying a problem beings its an auto trans truck. Never had a ball in bed that i could see, didnt see any kind of plate bolted to frame so im guessing its never towed heavy and/or far. It doesnt look like its been deleted or had any kind of tuner/programmer installed. Like i said, just new to this generation so any info about anything you guys could give me would be much appreciated. Thanks! |
anyone?

The 68RFE is a very good transmission and outlasted the G56 that my son had in his 2011. When I changed the transmission oil I installed an after market pan with a drain plug, as a bonus it was finned aluminum and reduced the transmission temps 10-12 deg. The truck drives far better than the 2001 but not to be negative the fuel mileage sucks and unless you can delete you will have problems with the emission equipment. First thing to do is check the tie rods to ensure they have been installed correctly. https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...notice-301143/ Next install a cabin air filter. https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...er-mod-284729/ Then buy a cheap code reader to keep in the truck so you can read any codes and reset them, with the Check Engine Light on or low fuel the remote starter won't work.

Unplug EGR valve. It will turn on the CEL but you wont be running its farts through it any more. Fuel mileage improves when you do this. Just traded my 10 for a 13 with DEF and I have to say I like it better so far.

nice...ill use dremel for the cabin filter mod......ive never had a vehicle with a cabin filter, what exactly is the purpose of one?

It filters the HVAC air before it gets blown into the cab. It helps alot to keep the interior clean if you are in dusty conditions.
