Smarty no longer in US

There may be another thread on this, but I was getting ready to order a Smarty JR (FINALLY) for my truck, and when I called somewhere they said Smarty was no longer available in the US? They said it was pretty much just H&S now. Is this true? I have nothing against H&S, but I just wanted a stock truck without the DPF etc. So the Smarty seemed like the best cheapest route to go?

I know I can still order a smarty from a few places, but should a guy be concerned about the future of running a smarty?

Smarty is still selling in the US just not the ME tunes anymore. They has also started to program their tuners not to accept any ME tunes, see their response to the EPA mandate that hit H&S along with the other tuning companies.

Edge who also makes a tuner for the 6.7L Cummins engine was fine $500,000 by the EPA at the beginning of the year.

This is Mad’s letter to all purchaser of the Smarty tuner.

Bummer. I really wanted to get rid of this DPF garbage. I think this is the end of diesel trucks for me. Cummins should have used DEF from the get go. This DPF setup is garbage! I think I'll have a gasser in the driveway soon... Guess the EPA and gubberment wins...

SCR (DEF) doesn't eliminate the DPF, though it does have a direct impact on the DPF.

You're 2010 uses In-Cylinder EGR for NOx reduction. The way the EGR affects the DPF is that EGR causes high soot production. The DPF is there to capture then burn off the soot. Soot's going to be generated whether or not you have EGR. The issue is that EGR causes more then normal soot production.

Unlike EGR, that uses the engine to reduce NOx, SCR (DEF) is an after treatment. SCR allow the engine to run like it didn't have EGR, but even on SCR equipped vehicles, EGR is still there because there are circumstances where SCR is ineffective. Still SCR allows for much less usage of EGR, which is a great thing!

A guy on a different forum is reporting he now has 1395 miles and used 78 gallons of fuel, on his '13 2500. That's an average of 17.88 mpg. He said it has 13 hours idle time and 29 driving. His drive time is about 30% city and on the highway, he's running between 75-80mph. On a brand new vehicle, these numbers are fantastic! He also said he's DEF gauge is still showing full and his oil was still clear, with a greenish tint..

Looks like Ram/Cummins made the right choice by going with SCR, like the rest on the 2013s!

**** that sucks but I saw it coming years ago. 6.7 retrofitted into an unrestricted 5.9 truck is the easiest route to go!

Still lots of issues with using an urea truck, seen two d-max loaded up onto a deck trailer last week and hauled to dealer (it was 500 miles to the closest dealer) . The urea froze solid and a bunch of DPF sensors/heater wasn't working decent enough to melt the urea. It was -32 deg's C.

My brother 2012 d-max, the urea nozzles were already clogged at 12000 miles and need a dealer visit.

Funny thing is my 2010 had no issues with the cold last week.

Marco (the guy that does the smarty thingy) has always been in Italy.

That maybe an issue with GMC/CHEVY but Ram has been using Urea (DEF) since 2010 on the C&C trucks. They have a different duty cycle than the pick-up trucks so Ram does have some experience with using Urea in cold weather.

I bought a 2012 Ram 2500 BECAUSE I wanted to avoid urea/SCR. I have it on my 2011 Duramax and I dont like it. It freezes at 12 degrees and it will throw a code when frozen which depending on where you live, could be every day. Also, as a used vehicle dealer I have had a number of urea/SCR issues on trucks with 60-100k miles and these are not covered (at least by GM) by the 100k engine warranty. As you can see by my signature I am usually on the first gen forum and this is the first 4th gen I have owned so Im not an expert ...but the dealer I work for has sold many, many 6.7s and we have had very few problems.

I saw two 2012 being d-max loaded onto a flat deck trailer north of fort nelson a few weeks back, just because of emission equipment issues. The new dmax's don't work well in weather that only gets to -30 deg's, day after day. My 2010 worked perfectly, no issues.

You have to make sure you get a smarty that has the ME programing. If you don't, PM me I can provide you with a site to download the latest software.

I'm not going to buy a new diesel truck, until you can do a delete, as its is difficult to make any money with these trucks, that get stuck at a dealership for weeks.

I know of a few companies running C&C 4500/5500 ford 6.7L, that have nothing but issues with the urea. Up north, you be lucky to get above -30 deg's and often see -40 deg's for weeks on. Nothing worse than having a brand new truck, that doesn't work when its cold out.

There's still smarty Sr and Jr available, both new and used. The well is drying up quick though so jump on it while you can.
Try different forum classified sections for them. Just make sure it is unlocked before buying.
