Whats all the hype with the Aisin Transmission

Whats all the hype with the Aisin Transmission and when did they start putting them in the Ram? I am thinking of upgrading to a newer 3500 mostly a 2012 so I am starting to do my homework.

The AISIN transmission is an attachment that was added to the 2013MY trucks and up. The transmission is only offered with the higher horsepower tucks of 385HP/850lb-ft of torque. This I think is only available on the 3500 Model truck both in SRW and DRW trucks.

1. Higher horsepower rating, and likely more comparative HP & torque to the rear wheels than the 68RFE.
2. Quicker, more efficient shifting. Possibly better mpgs.
3. Might be slightly more reliable*, likely better resale value.

*68RFE hold up fine with stock power though.

it is a ten times better transmission than the 68 for towing. in fact it is like comparing a bucket of slop to a aged beef steak. you can shift it to the gear you want and it stays locked in, they must have sneaked over to ford and copied there best features and added some.

The Aisin is a true medium-duty truck transmission.

So when combined with a true medium-duty truck engine (Cummins), you end up with a light-duty truck with an overbuilt drivetrain. A winning combo IMHO.

This is a quote from a friend and member over on CF :

The Aisin AS69RC is more robust and has PTO capabilities.

Info on the 68rfe:

http://www.dieselhub.com/trans/68RFE.html

"The 68RFE is a diesel specific transmission, unlike previous designs, engineered specifically to meet the needs of the 6.7L Cummins turbo diesel. The transmission's bandless design and upgraded filtration system extend maintenance intervals and reduce service costs. Additionally, the transmission is significantly stronger than Chrysler's 47RE & 48RE proved to be. Finally, the inline 6 Cummins has a 6 speed transmission to utilize all the engine's torque."

Info on the Aisin (It has PTO capabilities):

http://www.dieselhub.com/trans/aisin-AS69RC.html

The Aisin AS69RC is a 6 speed automatic transmission offered in the 2013 Ram HD. It is similar in design to the AS68RC, which was only available in chassis cab Rams mated to the 6.7L Cummins. The AS69RC is one of three transmissions offered for 2013, and will be standard on the high output version (385 hp/850 lb-ft) of the 6.7L Cummins. The transmission is larger and more robust than both the AS68RC and 68RFE. Ram claims the transmission has a 64% higher input torque capacity than the 68RFE. It is manufactured by Aison Seiki, a Japanese automotive parts supplier. Though actual input torque capacity is unknown, its application suggests it will be in the 850-950 lb-ft range. For comparison, the AS68RC has a max input capacity of 750 lb-ft. The AS69RC also replaces the AS68RC in chassis cab models for 2013. Its wide ratio spread provides low gearing for tow applications, while a relatively high 0.63 second overdrive keeps engine rpm low at highway speeds to maximize fuel economy."

Personally......I really like the Aisin. The 68RFE in my 2007.5 RAM 3500 MegaCab gave me 114k miles of perfect service.

Thumbs up Asian 6 Sp

I made the jump on 2014 Ram 3500 6.7L Asian with 3.42's

I tow a #16000 (+,- #25) 5th wheel with relative ease in eastern PA. I have not tackled any big hills yet but the mated pair are very smooth and work well together.

All that said, I have installed head studs and waiting for folks that develop the additional smiles to get off their duff and catch up.

Well, I admit you do have to stay on top of the 68RFE when towing. That's what the +/- button is for on the stalk. Still, the 68RFE is leaps and bounds better than the 48RE.

I see these Aisin transmissions in Isuzu work trucks, they do have PTO capabilities, they are a very stout trans, glad to see RAM went with

So will it lock from the start too? As in, can you start out in 2nd gear while in the semi-automatic mode?

Thx

So in other words, it locks out a gear to not shift above?

In light of the enhanced torque handling capability, are the Aisin equipped trucks spared the obnoxious torque management that the 68rfe suffer from?

No it has its share.

Mine will dead pedal in an off-on-off situation or if you floor it.
