Oill filter question

I change my own oil and just changed the oil in my 2011, had it at the dealer for a leaky fuel tank and they mentioned to me that if i change my own oil I need to use either a mopar filter or a Fleet Gaurd filter. I used a Wix filter and they said if I continue to use the Wix it would void my warranty. Anyone heard of this ??

Did they say why
As far as I know Wix is a great filter, its not like your using a crappy filter like a fram.

I agree! In fact you might even ask the dealer if they have ever heard of the Magnuson-Moss Act, which in short states that a manufacturer cannot void the warranty if you use a different brand of oil or filter (as long as it meets OEM specs.) unless the manufacturer furnishes said product free of charge. There are any number of filters out there that are as good as or better than mopar (Donaldson nano-fiber filters for example) and WIX is certainly a good filter.

Check and see if the Wix filter is on the approved filter list. I beat it is not and that is why they said what they did. There is a thread on here somewhere about approved fitlers. I personally would not use a Wix. Fleetguard, Donaldson, or Amsoil is all i would consider using. I use the Donaldson but did use the Fleetguard for several years.

If you were to us a Wix filter, then I would recommend that you use this Wix filter part number 557620XE. This is a full synthetic filter and very similar to the Fleetguard Strataphore filter.

Tell them that if they demand you use a certain filter they they had better be prepared to furnish it.

No where in the book does it say what brand of filter you MUST use.

i just did a search on DealerConnect (chrysler) and nothing came up with the following search terms

wix
wix oil filters
wix filter
wix filters

I would have the dealer provide proof if they are stating that you can't use wix filters.

They are full of crap. They would have to prove that the oil filter caused the issue, which is doable if the filter does fail. But a blanket void from a filter is illegal.

If there was a filter failure and it did damage the motor and your warranty was denied then you could sue wix for a bad filter.

Its not a synthetic filter, and is in between the OEM and the Stratapore, the Stratapore is fully synthetic and has better filtration.

Excatly, if they require a specific brand they have to legally furnish it.

I believe there is an approved list for filters that you are "supposed to use" that either Cummins published or Dodge did, but the price you pay for a Wix is pretty close to what you pay for a Mopar filter at Walmart which runs me $9 and some change. I agree Wix is a decent brand but for a few dollars more you have piece of mind and no issues if you have engine troubles down the road.

The wix is a better filter than the OEM, so I would run it over the OEM. But the Stratapore is the best to run if you want to stick to an "approved" filter. The absolute best filter is the Amsoil/Donaldson filter, and it's not on the list, but that doesn't stop me considering it filtration efficiancy is much better than stock.

The "approved" list is not a must use list, its a know to be good list. If the filter isn't on that list it may take a little more to get warranty work but they can't deny it blanketly based on the list. The list is also from 2001, and hasn't been updated to include 2002+ motors.

Here is some data I have collected.

Amsoil EaO080/ Donaldson ELF 7349 15 microns absolute
Fleetguard Stratapore 25 microns absolute
Baldwin BT7349 30um absolute
Wix 57620XE 25um @ 95%
Fleetguard/ Mopar Standard 35 microns absolute
Wix 57620 30um @95%

I used the Donaldson on my last truck and had no issues and will most likely go to that on the next service when I order my AMSOIL

The Donaldson IS a great filter and if you order an Amsoil EAO80 it is a Donaldson Nanofiber filter and should cost the same or even a bit less.

Actually I have always found the Donaldson to be cheaper. The Donaldson ELF7349 and the EaO80 are the exact same filter with different paint.
