Oil Brands and frequency of change

Hi guys, this is my first diesel truck and was wondering what brands of oil you guys use? Also was curious if any of you have found any sites with great deals on filters and what not. Is an oil change at 1000 miles worth it or is it just paranoia? I've always done an early oil change on my gas vehicles and don't see why it wouldn't be any different on a new diesel engine but figured I'd ask.

I wish these trucks had an oil monitor, my old GMC had one and really like that feature.

It's even more important than on gas rigs!

Frequent oil changes are an excellent idea on the newer diesels as the break-in process allows a lot more soot/fuel to get into the oil.

The do have an "oil monitor" it just doesn't pop up until it's change time. And just like the GM's it is based on an algorithm.

I use Rotella T and the Mopar filters.

I would change the first oil quick. I did mine right at 1k miles. For now I let the reminder tell me when to change it. Its soon gonna get deleted, then I run 5k change intervals.

I'm running the same filter - from Geno's ($12.95??), but I'm running regular Rotella T until I delete it or it gets broken in. I did my first change at 1k and have been on 5k changes since - change 3 will be this week.

I have seen a bump in mpg with each oil change. I'm at 16mpg highway now, 6mpg more than my furd was giving me. I love this truck.

I have 1200 miles on my truck now. Should I change the oil now? It still looks clean and not black like an old diesel. Oil technology has come a long way. Should I just spin on a new filter?

I worked around engine factories years ago and I understand things are better now, but a factory is a factory and a certain amount of dirt and grit has to be in there. Get it out ASAP. IMHO

I agree, the first change should be as soon as possible.

I have a friend who bought a 2011 earlier this year. I told him to change the oil as soon as he got home from Dave Smith. Well he heard that was a waste of money from some random dealership. Anyhow, fast fwd to the oil change reminder. He changed the oil and felt some of the old oil and it was not smooth. It had a lot of soot and break-in by products in it. He was so nervous his motor was bad he took an oil analysis, took the truck to Dodge, etc... Everything was fine, he just ran the new oil too long.. So in the long run he wasted more time and money not just changing it often with a new motor.

If all ya'll are all hot and bothered about it, get an oil bypass set up and the Baldwin BD7317 oil filter.

I second the recommendation of unit74. If you have the capability to filter the oil down even further, DO IT. I recommend the oil bypass with full deletes, then you will be happy.
