Gearing Advice

Bought a 2011 3500 4x4 6sp dually and did not pay close enough attention to the gear ratio. Came with the 3.42 and I tow a lot for my construction company. The 3.42 is not enough and want to go to either 3.73 or 4.10. Looking for advice. Tow loads upward of 18k goosneck.

My truck has the 3:42 rear end and my car hauler weighs upwards of 20K. I love the 3:42 rear, with 1st gear being a granny gear it does great in town and is way better on the highway.
I think your money will be better spent on a tuner and deletes.

What rpm are you running at 65?

Tow in 5th...it will be the equivalent of towing in 6th with 4.56's...

5th is the direct gear too...

Appreciate all of the responses. I don't like towing in 5th on the interstate, I would like to keep the motor around 2000 rpm's and keep some speed and the truck pulls real well at this rpm. As far as the tuner and deletes, will the stock clutch hold up to the power? Looking at the H&S site the power increase is significant.

X2 that'll put around 2500rpm in direct drive right where you should be towing 18k

If towing in 5th is the answer; what do I do about getting the load going? Truck is not a huge fan of this either.

If it's 2WD swapping out rear gears may be worth the $$ to you but it still won't be cheap...but probably the cheapest option. Other option I can think of is gear vendors over/underdrive but you're talking some serious $$.

G56 manual and 3.73 will put you at about the same as an auto and 4.10 gears. You should be good if you do that and you will keep your warranty. The clutch is the weakest link with the dual mass flywheel. If you turn it up, you will need a clutch real soon.

Cranking out 2500rpm would not be an option for me either. That will eat some serious fuel.

Actually, this happens all the time. People mess up and get the wrong gear ratio.

Sorry if you feel like I am an idiot, that is your own problem. FYI, this is the first new truck purchase I have ever had and I am proud to have this truck. It is people like you who run off newbies like myself. If you have nothing constructive to say please do not respond to any of my posts, I am sure I will do something stupid again and just wish I could be as perfect as you think you are!!!!
