front axle u-joint problem?
front axle u-joint problem?
Hi All,
I believe one of my front axle u-joints has a problem. But, would like to get some input before visiting the dealer.
My truck is a 2010 mega-cab, 51k miles, deleted, and use a Boss snow plow on this truck.
When driving straight down the road, the truck feels and sounds good. But, when turning left or right, in both forward and reverse, there is a squeaking noise from the front of the truck. I can hear the squeaking at low speeds, such as in my driveway, and at street speeds, such as navigating a street corner. The noise is a squeak-squeak-squeak (it gets loud and soft instead of being constant) and varies as my speed varies. Also, the steering seems to pulse a little bit when steering out of a corner. At a dead stop, I can turn fully left and right without any unusual noises or steering wheel feedback.
So, does this sound like a u-joint problem to everybody? Is there anything else I should do to self-diagnose the problem?
Also, are the u-joints covered under the power-train warranty?
Thanks,
John

It could be a rock/stone stuck between the backer plate and the disc. If it is a u joint that's squeaking you should see signs of rust around the seals on each bearing cap. Could be a wheel bearing going.
