My cousin has a 2007 3500 single cab 4x4 6speed 5.9 flatbed the truck its self has 70,000mi on it but he had to put a new engine in it and the new one has 10,000mi he wants to sell it and the dodge house offered him $18,000 for it he said mite take alittle less if i was to buy it..but he said its only getting 14mpg that sound alittle low to me for a 5.9 but it hasent been broke in yet either with the 10,000mil on it...jw if yall think that i should try to get it..i think that i is a great deal but its gunna be hard for me to get the $18,000...im in college

 

14 MPG in city traffic is an honest assessment of the truck's mileage. 18-20 MPG can be expected on the freeway depending on speed.

Combined, 15-16 is good mileage. Consider that a Honda Pilot gets about 17.

 

it all sounds good to me i drive a chevy 2500HD 4x4 with a 6.0L in it and 4.10 rear end so im lucky to see 9mpg

 

If you can afford it, get it. In town mileage that is about right in the world of reality.

 

My truck gets an honest 15-16 90% city 10% highway. 100% highway nets about 21 MPG.

Honestly though, I've been in your place. If you're in college and money is tight, I wouldn't do it. I've gone through tons of vehicles because I bought them on a whim and then realized it was more than I could handle at the time. 14 MPG even at only 2.50/gal isn't cheap when you can't afford the payments to begin with. 5.00/gal on the other hand really hurts...

How close are you to your cousin? How did he blow the motor? Has the truck ever had a programmer(s) on it? Any other engine modifications? Looking beyond whether or not you can afford it (which isn't a question to be asking here as we don't know your finances and it isn't really an opinion-based question; you either can or you can't), I would be most concerned with how he managed to kill a Cummins in 60000 miles. I would think that a truck that has been beat on THAT hard is bound to have quite a few other problems lying in wait as well. The only thing worse than stretching yourself financially to buy a truck you can barely afford is for that truck to start breaking on you shortly after purchase and you DEFINATELY don't want to have any bad blood with your family over the deal were it to go sour.

My opinion? Pass. Then again, one of my cardinal rules is that I NEVER do business with family.

 

you wont see over 17 highway with that truck has g56 with lower overdrive, i killed my 07 at 68k with no programmer. dealing with family is a hard pill to swallow truck is worth the money tho

 

I beg to differ on the mileage. My father's 05 and my uncle's 06 both are early G56 equipped and both can see 19.5-20mpg hand calculated on the highway unloaded (both are QC DRW, one a 2wd, one a 4wd). Every truck is different so the mileage is what it is. You can get two trucks built one after the other in the identical setup and one might get 16mpg while the other will get 21mpg. It's just one of nature's little mysteries.

PS-Rich, judging by your sig, you are rough on vehicles. No offense, but i wouldn't want to buy a used truck from you. My '01 has 356K miles on it, 275K of them hooked to the 20000lbs. G/N, and still runs like a champ. Never had anything but some A/C work and a couple clutches.

 

me and my cousin are close and i have talked to my parents and if i sellmy truck now and 4wheeler i would only owe bought 6grand and with my uncle being the preident at the bank in our small town i can get a good deal on the loan..he had said from day one that the old engine in that truck wasnt rite, and the new one runs just like it should..never been chipped..only thing he had done is new front brake pads cus the stock ones kept turing the front wheels black..for the gas milage it would still be cheaper than my 8-10mpg (10 if im lucky) rig im driving now...dang 2.50 a gallon? our is bout 2 in north texas...so basically the only thing is the family thing for me to figure out...

funny i have the 07 and 06 exactly the same and are stock and seem to get no less then 2 miles mpg difference. i run upto 1000 miles per week towing with an avg cargo weight of 1ok on the trailer. those trucks were traded for trucks with less miles and if your 01 has not needed a lift pump or anything else major i dont htink yuou tow as much as you talk about. i go thru pads rotors and other item just to name a few including injectors

 

Still original VP44, original injectors, obviously new brakes and rotors and other normal maintenance wear items. Im just as surprised as anyone (especially after reading internet forums on VP trucks) that the truck has held up as well but all the proof is in the pickup sitting outside. Im a hotshot by trade and work oilfield equipment so the truck gets worked and has since day one. 100% bone stock. Well, i take that back. Just a couple of weeks ago the muffler rusted through so I replaced it with a straight pipe kit from Geno's...

 

on those trucks of mine it was the rest of the vehicle that failed to to keep up with the motor.the 07 was the most disapointing one as to the fact i bought it with a150 miles on it and less then a month later at about 4500 it started having problems

 

I have seen from 19 to 21 MPG highway with my '06 G56 (driving easy @ 60-65 MPH, hand calculated over ~2000 miles). The 2007 G56 has the taller final drive ratio and should do a tad better. I recently drove up to Canada with a front end dolly in the bed and towed a small car back and got 19.5 for the trip.


You must be running REALLY hard to kill a 5.9 in 68K miles....what happened?
