Why can't I hook auxiliary tank to truck tank?

I read somewhere as long as you hook the aux. tank hard (copper or metal tubing) to neck of factory tank you're ok. But some where else I read you can't, because of some DOT thing, what gives. This tank is probably stronger than factory tank & it's protected better than the factory tank being in the bed. I mean look at 18 wheeler, the tank is sitting on the side & looks like you could puncture it with an ice pick. I would love to hook an extra 100 gallons or so & fill up when diesel is cheaper at some places.

I have a tank in the bed. I think diesel is ok however gas is not in some states. I am sure some else will chime in here with some more help.

mine is plumbed to the tank also. i've been told that up here in canada it is illegal to have aux tank plumbed in if truck is 04 or newer. also, supposedly, the dot is more likely to pull us over if they see aux tank, to see if it is dyed.

This is FMCSA section 393.65(d)
It is NOT illegal to gravity feed to your vehicles tank.

It is illegal to gravity feed directly to the motor.
