What Should I do?
The time has come to think about getting a new (bigger) truck. I currently own a 1998 12V standard cab but need something bigger for the kid on the way. I have been looking at the 08s but am definetely gun shy. The truck I am looking for is a 4X2 lwb quad cab auto. I am stuck between a rock and a hard place because the 07 5.9 is very hard to come by with everything I am looking for. Do you think I should get rid of my current truck and bite the bullet on an 08?
I'd look for an 03 or early 04 if you aren't set on a new one. The 03/04.4's have been very good with only 2 injection events, no emission junk and very good mileage. I have an 03 with 113K and it gets consistent 19.9 to 21 mpg. I looked at an 08 myself, but couldn't bring myself to the mpg penalty or dealing with the emissions stuff.

I decided to pull the trigger on a new truck in 2006 to avoid what the future was going to bring in the emissions department. I am VERY GLAD I bought when I did, at that time it appeared that all the 2007's would have had the emissions stuff.
I think you have to ask yourself some questions -
Do I want to buy a 2008 with the emissions AND all the options I would like to have?
OR
Would I be better off with the 2007 5.9, none of the PITA emissions stuff, and a few less options? If you could find a 2007 5.9 close to what you want, could you have the dealer add the other options, or at least some of them?
If you think about all this, maybe spend a little time seeking the 2007, maybe even find one, ask the dealer about those options, then make your final decision. It's obvious that a 2008 CAN be found with the stuff you want, but if you are teetering and gun shy, give a look see for a 2007 first as it just might be what you want anyway.
I know that if I was looking right now, my focus would be on the 2007, hands down, it would be the truck I would prefer. As long as it had the basics the rest of my needs would be met via dealer add-ons, aftermarket stuff, or not at all.
