Automatic Idle up feature

At what temp do the trucks automatically idle up? It was around 20-22 degrees this morning and mine did not idle up. How long after startup does this feature kick in? Maybe I did not wait long enough. Also, after I started it I shifted it into neutral while I let it idle. Maybe thats why mine did not work.

Mine has only done it once so far (but, after tonight I think winter is supposed to be here). (70* here today, December 1st????)

It does take a minute or two, and I believe you can't touch anything (brake, gear selector) or it won't come on.
Mine came on when it was about 40* out, it didn't stay up as long as I thought it would though, only like 3 minutes. I guess that is temp dependent too?

mine does it too

Mine has done it once. It's not the full blown, cruise controlled high idle. I was idling while scraping windows a few wks ago, idle kicked up from 750 to 1000.

From what I've read, this is a normal feature for 3rd gen's. To get the 'full' high idle features you have get it activated at the dealer or with a programmer.

Mine will go to high idle after about a minute or so, around 40F.

When I start it around 0F, it immediately goes to 1000 RPM.

I also noticed after a recent trip (13 hours of driving), I let it idle when I got home while I unloaded my gear. It was 8F outside, and it went to high idle after a minute or so. This is after driving all day.

My truck did it this morning also. I started the truck and let it run about 5 min. then drove about a mile to the store to fill up. When iI came out of the store after paying I noticed it was idling higher. It was idling around 1000 rpm. I have never had that happen before and I have had the truck almost 2 years.
The outside temp was 26.
I didn't know that the truck would do this either.

No special visit to the dealer needed on my 06. It idles up to about 1K when warming up. Just like the grid heater cycles.
Started using the block heater to come on from 12-2 than again from 5-7 so I get some warm air before I am 10 miles down the road. It was a big help the other morning when I woke up to -8.

Sure wish I could get the wife to let go of the ski boat so I can put the truck in the garage at night. Now that we are up in Colorado from Texas the boat spends lots more time collecting dust. Paid way to much for it to let it sleep outside.

I was parked outside/unplugged twice this week with temps in the single digits. After the manifold heater light went off, I started it and it immediately went to 1000 rpm's. It took about 20 seconds for the white smoke to clear and the motor to run smooth.

I just bought my first diesel today. it is a 2006 2500 ctd 4x4 quad cab. do i need to be worried about warm up times? or a better way to put it is how should i treat my truck every morning when i get up for work? just start and go like my gasser? i live in Houston, it is maybe freezing a couple days out of the year.

Do you have an automatic? If so, just go to the dealer and have them enable the high idle feature. This way if you are going to let it warm up for more than 5 minutes or so you can ramp it up (manually with the cruise buttons) to a better RPM for warm up/extended idling.

Truthfully, in normal temps (above 25-30 or so) you can let it run for about 2 minutes and roll. I wouldn't goose it out of the driveway or anything, but taking it easy for the first 3 miles or so. Nothing wrong with that.

Better yet, go to a Cummins dealer and get yourself a block heater cord (if you didn't get it as a factory option) This way if you anticipate coder temps (less than 40*), you can plug it up. A plugged in truck will come up to full operating temp faster than you could imagine.

Good luck with your new truck.

thanks for the reply PJ. I think i am just going to take it easy for the first 3-5 miles or until operating temp. i do that anyway with my gasser.

thanks!

It will also do it if it cools down, I was filling up the other morning at the pump, the temp was 5 degrees, I had driven 10 miles to the station and the temp was about 160. I stopped started fueling and went inside to pay, come out and it was high idleing, the temp gauge was reading 140. Nice little feature for keeping the warm air flowing.

I thought I read that the high idle will kick in under 34 degrees. My 05 did it a couple of times last year.
