BFGoodrich Rugged Trail T/A (what your truck probably came with) are the best.

1. Excellent high-mileage tire
2. excellent for towing
3. Off-road capability doesn't get any better without sacraficing performance of #1 and #2.

All-Terrain T/A KO's are better off road, but not so good for towing heavy. A buddy of mine got the Pirelli's and regretted it.

Toyo ATs are E rated, which IMO are much better when it comes to stability when towing. Sidewall rigidity in a E rated tire allows for less sidewall flex when towing...

Tires

All tires for this kind of truck should be E rated, even your factory BFGs.

Odd how you only get 24K miles out of the TKO bfg's, close friend gets 60K+ miles out of BFGs on a powerstroke and he is really hard on the tires, maybe that is why his tranny starting slipping at 120K.

What pressure are you running with your BFGs - should be in the 80 to 90 psi range.

One member stated that TKOs are not good for towing, please elaborate. I do not understand why this tire would not be good for towing.

I've had BFG ATs on mine since birth back in Nov 2003. I've just recently decided to lift and install 35" Nittos on there. The BFGs have 38000 miles on them and probably have about 8000 to 10000 miles left on them. I've always run them with 55 in front (psi) and 65 in the rear when I'm towing.

I've towed horse trailers, flatbed trailers, and about 11,000 pounds of Sea Ray monster boat (basically a condo on a trailer) with no problem. I've launched at Powell several times and retrieved that big butt boat up there with no problems whatsoever.

The only problem, not the tires fault, was a nail in the self proclaimed "no fix" zone by Discount Tire, in which, they gave me a new tire for free.

Pimping my own product here...sorry...I'm taking off the MKW MK19 17" chrome wheels along with the 285/70/17 tires and selling them Craigslist after Sunday. They'll be pretty cheap. It'd be a cheap way to find out whether or not 285 BFGs are for your application. I've got pics in my gallery.

Now, back to our regular programming.....!

TKO's sidewall is softer which makes it a better off-road tire, but not so good for heavy towing stability.

I replaced my original BFG Rugged-Trail's with the same at 70,000 miles. They still had plenty of tread left and I probably could have run them to 80-85,000 miles but I was leaving on a long trip.

If you are going down to a 285 tire and looking for a good HIGHWAY tire, Michelin makes their LTX line in a 285/70R17. Michelin makes the best on-road tires you can buy, IMO. If they made these in a 315, i would have them in a heartbeat.

i've never gotten more then 35 out of bfg's due to a high amount of towing, michelins are the only ones that i have had that have gone 55k plus with all the towing.

I would not put a D rated tire on that truck - towing or not - but especially not if I were planning to tow a heavy load. E rated tires have a firmer sidewall - less flex. Many people towing 5ers with D rated tires - even ones rated to carry more weight than the OEM tires - report a fair degree of "squirm", for lack of a better word.

I agree with you that Michelins are the best mileage road tire you can get, but they do not make a 285 or larger in an E load range last I checked.

Many folks like the Nitto Dura Grapplers for highway towing, or even the Terra Grapplers (a A/T tire). They are available in the larger sizes (285+) in a E load range. Consummer reports rates the Terra Grappler as the best A/T tire they have tested, for what it's worth.

Another tire many on this site like is the Toyo Open Country (A/T) - it comes in larger sizes in a E load rating.

I have the original 265 Michelin A/S on my 2004.5. In the next 6 months I intend to go to the 285/70 (E) Nitto Dura Grapplers.

Good luck!

I agree with coobie. Check tire rack, they give ratings for most of the tires listed on their site and reviews from users.

I have the Bridgestone Duelers. Nice looking tire but the white letters get damaged pretty easy. Just rubbing a curb will try to peel the lettering off.

Other than that I gotten about 30000 miles out of them. But will need some new ones in a few months.

You need to go to an E rated tire especially if you are having death wobble.

Also, my 315 bfg a/t's have 20K on them and look great...
