Testing Fuel Level Gauge
Testing Fuel Level Gauge
Does anybody know which wires to jump together on the connecter on the fuel level sender to test the fuel gauge? I would like to test the gauge before just replacing the level sending unit.
It depends on where you are at in the wire harness. If you disconnect the connect by the tank it's the two center terminals on the harness. Its easiest to get to the harness with the rear left wheel removed. But you still need skinny arms to get between the frame rails.
I tried checking my gauge last night by shorting the center two pins together and nothing happened on my gauge. The dodge guy said that it could be a wire between my sending unit and the gauge, so I put a volt meter between the two pins to see if I was getting voltage to it. I am getting 12 volts to the connector on top of the tank, so I don't think it is a bad wire. Not sure if that rules out the gauge since a direct short didn't make it show a level. Since the sending unit works on resistance do I need a small resistor to short the two pins together? I used a 16 guage wire last night.
If your fuel gauge is not reading properly also check the wire harness at the ECM on the side of the engine. There is a metal tab there to hold wire harness there and it may have chafed through the wire. I had that happen on mine and it fried the circuit in the ECM that controls the fuel gauge and only way to fix it was to replace the ECM. New ECM was $2400 so found a used one and had them flash it for my truck.
It is not reading at all. I got it to work by putting a resistor in the center two pins of the connector at the fuel tank. I also wiggled the connector that it runs to that is mounted on the back side of the wheel well on the front drivers side. Not sure which made it work. Ran out of day light last night. I may have a bad connector up front.
