Hey guys, let me ask you all this.

I want to install a double din navigation and DVD player into my wifes 4Runner. The AVIC Z series is out - way too much money. Instead I'm looking at the AVIC-D3. With the D3 can my son watch a DVD in the rear (on separate screen) while my wife is using the navigation? If not, is there a unit available that will navigate and play a DVD at the same time for around the $750 range?

Thanks!

I'm 99% sure you can't do that with the D3 because it only has 1 DVD slot. The nav is based off of DVD's so you have to eject the nav disk to watch a DVD. It might hold enough nav info in memory to let you watch a DVD though, but I doubt it. Maybe someone here has one and can tell you for sure.

I think there's another Pioneer model between the D3 and Z1 that has 2 DVD slots and can play movies while using nav. Your other option is to use a second DVD player for the rear screen(s). You could still display the nav stuff on the rear screens too if he wanted to watch that in addition to DVD's. Stand alone DVD players are pretty cheap these days.

I have been doing a little reading on this kenwood stuff, sounds kinda interesting, in some ways better than the pioneer. Like bluetooth, on the kenwood you can dial out from the touch screen, and the navigation is garmin based on the kenwood. Im hoping some guys are running it so I can get some real world reports

Not sure what you mean about the Bluetooth thing? The Z1/2 lets you dial using the touch screen. It will also let you dial using voice commands (just say the number and it dials)! The voice command actually works well on the Z1 too.

I've heard good things about the Kenwood Excelon series, but I'm just not a fan of Kenwood in general.

You can dial with the pioneer? The guy at the stereo shop told me that only kenwood could do that,,, I know about the voice command thing.... man, this is being much more difficult that I imagined. There seems to be good points to both,,,

Yes sir! It will give you a screen with all the numbers and you just choose by touchscreen. You can also say the numbers and dial by voice control.

If they stock Kenwood instead of Pioneer then maybe they just want to lead you in that direction. You can probably find much better unbiased reviews of both units on websites like Amazon. I don't think you would be making a mistake going with either one...they seem pretty comparable.
