Replacing the Wiper Switch
Replacing the Wiper Switch
Please help. My wipers are staying on intermitant and I have pulled the fuse so that they do not run at all now. I bought the switch a few weeks ago and tried to put it in and have found that the possiblilty of pulling the steering wheel may be required.
Has anyone done this repair and not pulled the steering wheel. If so what did you do to get those screws out that are between there. Thank you for your input. The truck will have to to somewhere to get fixed if I cannot do it myself. I cannot live with out wipers.

After looking at the shop manual, it appears the multi-function switch slides on/off the steering column after the steering wheel is removed. There is a bolt on the top and a bolt on the bottom side of the steering column holding the switch on. By the looks of it, you gotta remove the steering wheel.
This is from the 2004 shop manual:
DISCONNECT THE AIRBAG FIRST
(1) Disconnect and isolate battery negative cable.
(2) Remove the steering wheel and the upper and
lower steering column shrouds. Refer to Steering,
Column, Shroud, Removal.
(3) Disconnect the wire connector from the back of
the multi-function switch.
(4) Remove the screws retaining the multi-function
switch to the steering column adapter collar (Fig. 16).
(5) Remove the multi-function switch.
(6) Remove the screws retaining the clock spring
to the multifunction switch.

I just replaced my multifunction switch myself a few weeks ago. You DO NOT have to remove the steering wheel. Took about 15 minutes for me.
No special tools needed. Just start taking the cover off and you will see what to do.

Hope this helps!
"Turn the wheel 90 degrees to the left so that the large opening at the top of the wheel is verticle. Remove the tilt column lever by pulling on it (can't remeber which way to pull). Remove the torx screws in the underside of the column cover. Remove the cover from around the column. Using a screwdriver, reach through the opening in the top of the wheel to remove the screws that hold the mlti-function switch in place. Install the new unit."

"Well after looking at the book and checking their instructions, I thought it was going to be too big of a job and that nobody else would want to do it. (disconnect batteries, removal of air bag, steering wheel, clockspring, etc.)
I figured out how to do it MUCH easier. All that other stuff is not necessary. If you remove the upper and lower shrouds on the steering column, and turn the wheel 90* to the left, you can remove the 2 philips head screws that holds the switch in there. The connector is on the back (push the red tag towards the instrument panel, squeeze, and pull it out) The whole switch just slides towards the left. Pulling up on the "ears" where the 2 screws were helps. The only thing holding it in is the little grey tit showing in the hole between the 2 screw holes."
I follwed these instructions and was done in minutes without steering wheel removal.
