Rear track

I was looking on info as to why vehicles have different tracks front and rear? The Dodge 2500 is a little over an inch narrower on the rear track as opposed to the front. I understand that it has the potential to affect handling adversely. Such as when traveling down a rutted road, is that true?

I have more than 38,000 miles and it tracks like a sports car.

I just have never found someone who had an explanation for why they build them that way... as opposed to wider or the same as the front track.

Good question. I've always wondered about that, too.

From my understanding from when GM started doing back in the '70s is that the rear tires doesn't track in the same rut that the fronts created. Gives the rear tires an extra bite. The GM HD 4x4 series looks really dorky because of the tracking. Some of my friends have put spacers on the rear hubs to even out the look.

Yes this is nothing new and has been done for some time. GM is the most noticable of the three.

I really don't know what their reasoning is for doing it. But like was mensioned it is really intended to add trackion. Pulling trucks use a very large offset, reason is that the front tires are not throughing all of the dirt right in the front of the back tires then. ALso the back tires are getting traction from undisturbed ground instead of the loose stuff from the front tire.

Again I really don't know why they do it from the factory. But it is really noticable on my dually
