Rear Axle?!

I saw my first '03 2500 w/ a HEMI in it. Are the American Axle's that are now being used smaller than the old Dana's? It looked like a toothpick under there... what's up with that? Are there different options available for the axle or something? Can you get a bigger one? I can't see that holding up under a heavy load... someone explain it to me please!!

Tony

Re:Rear Axle?!

Dodge is putting either 10.5 or 11.5 inch axles in the heavy duty trucks, depending on model. Mine looks plenty big to me but I have the 11.5 inch.

Casey

Ahhhh, thanks for clearing that up. It just looked really small for some reason and I wasn't sure why! ;D

Tony

Re:Rear Axle?!

If you order the 4.10 ratio you myst have anti-slip and the 11.5" axle by AAM.

Re:Rear Axle?!

The front axles are smaller than a Dana 60, though, in terms of ring gear size.
Chris

Re:Rear Axle?!

Front axle is "FRONT AXLE - 9 1/4 AA DESCRIPTION
The axle consists of a cast iron center casting differential
housing with axle shaft tubes extending
from each side. The tubes are pressed into the differential
housing and welded. The design has the centerline
of the pinion set above the centerline of the
ring gear. The axle has full-floating axle shafts,
meaning the shaft are supported by the hub bearings.
The axle has a vent used to relieve internal
pressure caused by lubricant vaporization and internal
expansion." from 2003 Service Manual
