Cummins switched from the VP44 to the CP3 in 03 right?

That is correct. HPCR 03 and up.

Do you guys know if the injection pump on 03's and up are more reliable than on 98 to 02 trucks?

You don't see too many threads about the CP3 going out, but then most of them are newer.

As I understand it the CP3 won't run without lift pump pressure, where the VP44 can continue to run without head pressure but doing so will cause failure pretty quickly. A fuel pressure gauge, or at least low fuel pressure warning light is a pretty popular thing to add to the VP44 equipped trucks.
