I've got it pretty well dialed in now still have to fine tune the average mpg. The www.scangauge.com will show you the price 130.00. Thats a few cents extra. Took the truck out for a drive and with no hydrogen, didn't check my tire pressure, outside temp 43deg. 29 miles of town driveing then set the cruise on 55mph with a 15mph head wind going north and a 15mph tail wind going south 125mi total. Overhead ave eco. said 25.6, scan gauge said 23.3 and actual was 20.67mpg. Now I adjusted the scan gauge to what the actual gallons used was. Topped off at the same station same pump.
The instant was great. Moves up and down as load and speed varies.

Hello Tree DR,

I just wanted to know if you are still lovin the scan gauge that you bought? How is it working out for you? Any new things to report about it?

I am still interested in finding a guy/gal who can reprogram my overhead to do the instant ECO, but failing this, maybe I will buy one of those scan gauges that you have.

Can you post a few pictures of the scan gauge in action? I'm interested to see how it looks. Where do you put it/mount it when you are driving down the road with it?

I can't speak for the Rams, but my in-law's 2002 Town and Country (minivan) has that mode. Meanwhile, my wife's 2002 Grand Caravan (minivan) does not. So it looks like something that DC does selectively by model and/or product.

My '01 2500 CTD had instant and average mpg, compass, outside air temp, elapsed time, and distance to empty, and trip meter. In US or metric.

Short answer: The instant eco is only available on gas engines, because the calculation is based on Mass Airflow....Remember, a Hemi runs on vacuum, while the Cummins is charged....Since there is no Mass Airflow Sensor on a Cummins, (we have MAP instead) there is no way for the computer to estimate air intake...That is the short of it...

(its a mathematical guess: Mass air flow, total fuel consumption, engine speed, vehicle speed, and other factors, all used to estimate instant eco)
the second gens have it and they are turbocharged!

The computer isnt really determining mpg, its more like amount of work being done...Then translating that into fuel economy

Which requires more work? Empty-2000rpm, or towing-2000rpm? Given those, more work is being done while towing. Engine and vehicle speed being the same, but air and fuel consumption is increased....It takes more pedal to get there....More pedal means more fuel..And without air, that fuel cant be burned...Not knowing much much air is being consumed makes it difficult to determine how efficiently the fuel is being burned, whether the engine is rich or lean...

The amount of fuel injected is irrelevant if it's not being burned....Remember: unburned fuel counts against mpg....The computer could think your getting 30mpg, simply based on what is being pumped from the tank, but hand calc would tell you otherwise...(I know, that sort of backwards, but you get the point) Or a dead injector: its not putting out fuel, but your still going 70mph...same speed, less fuel used, must be good mileage, huh? Nope..Loss of power, other problems...But based on the above assumption, economy would be great......

Air consumption and fuel consumption, along with engine speed tells you how much work the engine is doing...Factor in vehicle speed and distance traveled, and you begin to figure mpg...

Why is it that this feature is availble on gas engines, but not diesels? I dunno, ask Dodge...This is merely what I've learned on the subject at hand

And sorry, hitting the reset doesnt work that way on '06's
the engine does know how much air is being consumed, thru the MAP sensor it can tell boost pressure

Hello Tree Dr,

Can you post a picture of this "Scangauge" as installed in your truck. I'm curious to see how and where you mounted it and how it looks. What kind of mounting hardware did you use? Since this unit is transportable, have you mounted and used it in one of your other vehicles?

Thanks,
Jerzy

My wife's 2002 Town & Country eL (yes, "eL", this is not a typo), has the instant ECO display on the overhead console. And I want it on my 2005 CTD! Hey Chrysler, are you listening?

The scan gauge has velcro mounting strips that I put on the dash, I put it in the middle of the dash angled toward me/driver. I've been doing too much with the gauge, swaping between vehicles that I just now got it dialed in on my truck. It's within .2 of had calculated now. I'm trying to see if my new edge is actually going to get me any better fuel mileage.

Had that feature in my 02 and really miss it in this truck, just a glance at the overhead would tell you how hard the engine was working. It was especially nice when towing.

Furthermore; using the above example, if you had set the overhead console to AVG ECO during this passing maneuver, there is a good chance that the MPG number would not have even changed one tenth, because it calculates MPG over the miles traveled since the last time you pushed the rest button.

JZ
Not entirely correct. It calculates mpg over the last 600 miles you travled OR the last time you pushed the reset button if less than 600 miles.

I had a '93 Mark VIII that had an instant eco mode as well as an average. The only use I ever found for the instant was just to play with on long boring trips. See how low or high I could get it to display. I read your rational for using it. Not something I really care about. But, that just me.

I have a 2000 3500 with an overhead computer center. It has a mode where I can see my average MPG and my Current MPG. The current MPG change instantly when I give gas or backing off of the throttle. It can vary between 40 to 8 MPG depending on what I'm doing at the time. Is this what you are talking about?

My 02 had the ECO. That is one of the first things that I noticed that my 06 did not have.
