Need Exhaust Answer
I have (well kinda) an MBRP TB exhaust on my truck. When I did my turbo upgrade I had to use an HX-40 style 3rd gen down pipe. Today I went to the local truck shop and purchased a Grand Rock 4" resonator....16"Lx9"round x 4" in/out....and a Dynaflex muffler...51"L x 10"round x 5" in/out. Got em for a really good price because I'm getting ready to put my stacks back on. Has anyone tried this kind of setup? It should be pretty quiet but was wondering about the fit right off the down pipe with the resonator. I only have about 70" total length from the end of the down pipe to where my hole is in the bed. If I join the two back to back it's 67" but in order to do that I would have to attach the resonator directly to the down pipe and am not sure if it will fit between the tranny and the x-member.
Whewww.....ok, does anyone know if this setup is possible or will I have go another route. I am very competent and mechanically inclined, I just don't have a shop or metal working tools at my home. I know I can probably make it work but I'm trying to keep it all removable if need be so I'm not going to be welding anything in. I'm trying to keep it a complete bolt-in setup.
Any and all thoughts will be appreciated.

Really, no one's done anything like this? It will be later next week before I can even start working on it. Just need some of you guys/gals input so I'll know if I need to make another trip to the store for extra elbows and such.

won't have enough room to do both. get the 51" in there if you can and you will be good. i only had the 24" donaldson muffler on my 07 with 8" stacks and it was nice (not too loud and very little drone below 2200 rpm)

I was using a 5" Magnaflow muffler with my stacks before and OH MY GOD the drone was awful. Not as bad as when I had the stock turbo and straight exhaust to the stacks but still very bad. I thought about it today at work a little bit.....couldn't actually go out and do any measuring because of the rain....and if I have to use/build some extra u-turn bends to get everything to line up I might be able to use both......really hoping to use both!! It would be an extremely tight fit if I went right off the down pipe, if the resonator will fit there at all, but yes, I think overall, the combo will be too long for a simple bolt up jobber. When I get some more time on my hands I'll have to get under there and do some major planning on this deal.
My truck looked ding dang good looking with the 6" mitres on it and really want 'em back on. I guess this one's just gonna take some time. Was really hoping for a one day deal but don't really see it as that right now.

Just went out to do some measuring during my break (working Sundays really sucks) and it would be a perfect fit lengthwise if I can wiggle the resonator in between tranny and x-member. Gonna be a super tight fit if it works out that way. Man, the more I think about this the more ansty I get about wanting to hear it
. Gonna take my existing exhaust off in the morning and see what happens. Almost seems like if I loosen the down pipe at the turbo I can clock it a little bit for some more room.
Anyone ever heard what a Dynaflex muffler sounds like on a Dodge anyways. Jeez, that shoulda been one of my first questions

Well, I finally got around to fitting the new pieces under the truck. What a PITA. Yes, the setup was a hair too long to work for a stack setup. Once I had everything in for a test fit I started the truck and thought.....this is crap!!!! With the resonator mounted just past the downpipe and the freakin HUGE 51" Dynaflex muffler, the tone was a little deeper but just as loud as my small MBRP muffler. Needless to say, I was very disappointed. Revving the engine up the drone hit at 2000k and I knew it would be twice as bad once the motor had a load on it. Good thing those 2 pieces were only a little more than a Benjamin.
Got a hold of Wally at FTE Diesel and now have one of his 4x30 resonators on it's way. Am very curious to see if everything I've read about them is true. If anyone has used one of these please post likes/dislikes. Would love to see some more feedback on this.

sorry to hear about all the bad luck with exhaust systems.
I hear good things about the FTE resonator. I was going to go with it but decided to go the cheap route and went with a donaldson 40 inch.

Am really wanting to put my stacks back on but with a 17 mo old strapped in the backseat....baby seat of course
....I really need it quiet as possible. And, plus, the older I get the more I like to be able to carry on a conversation in the cab and keep the radio volume down at the same time. I just couldn't believe that with those 2 pieces on there it was still that loud.
Oh well, whatever comes of this deal I got some good wrench time on it and thats always fun
.
Now I can't wait until the new FTE piece arrives. Gettin antsy all over again.

Keep us informed, my only complaint about the donaldson is it cut out my second gen exhaust manifold sound, but the ride is so much better on the highway. Need someone to do a drive by for me so I can hear my truck on the outside
I do enjoy listening to the turbo tunes now, just need an upgrade

I know its expensive but I've been totally satisfied with my Corsa exhaust. There is absolutely no drone. Corsa says the muffler is tuned to the Cummins and I believe them. The muffler is straight through with no obstructions, just a straight pipe with a couple 1" or so wide slots at either end. These slots lead to tuned chambers within the muffler.
They do sell the muffler by itself, that may be something to look at.

Well, my FTE part came in Saturday.....only 2 days from when I ordered it
. Will put it on this week for sure. mikeh1725...is there that much of a sound difference between exhaust manifolds? It's really hard to tell listening to sound clips on the pooter.
I've not done much reading on the Corsa systems...may have to look into that once I install my resonator and get an idea of the sound.

Honestly, if you going to run a muffler then I don't know if the swap is worth it. I can't comment on how it would sound with an fte, but I assume it would sound good. Wish I could get one so I could make some sound clips.
Now if straight pipe is what you want, then 5 inch is the way to go... my dually sounded mean
Look on my channel for "suburban tow"

i PUT AN FTE 4X30 SS RESONATOR on my 06 in dec /10,fantastic sound suppression in the truck, you dont here exhaust noise hardly at all towing at highway speeds,it seemed to me you need to get your rpm up to scavenge the exhaust pulling a grade and it was fine.I think i wld go with the 5 inch with reducers next time.Sure quiet in the cab and still sounds nice outside.Very impressed.
