It just started KNOCKING???

I got off the freeway this AM and pulled up to a stop sign and heard the engine knocking...started up again and it really started knocking under a little load...went away when it got up to speed. Oil pressure looks OK...??? Any ideas???

Re:It just started KNOCKING???

Explain the knock. Is it more like a heavy ticking, a deep type of knock or just a light knock? Was this the first stop of the day with a cold engine? Or was the engine at operating temp? After it went away did it return? If so, can you hear it under load more, or more under compresssion? How long since your last oil change? Is your oil at the 'full' mark?

Sometimes mine pounds. I put a baseball mitt on the passenger seat to catch the pistons when they come through the firewall. If it is knocking drive the hell outa it to blow it up. You'll get a shiny new engine this way.

I'm also interested in how many miles are on the engine, and on that oil. What kind of oil are you running in it?

FWIW, mine has knocked a little, a couple of times - sounded a little like the Powerstroke Idle Knock. And to think I bought a CTD to get away from the "cackle".

My ideas: Keep driving it. & get a mitt.

I've only ever experienced a slight knock on a cold morning. Better get that thing checked. I have 12K on mine and never heard a bad knock.

Will be interesting to see what you say about how many miles and type of oil used

Re:It just started KNOCKING???

It's got 17900 miles on it...the last oil change I switched to Cheveron Dello.
The engine was way warm just ran it 40 miles at 80 miles per hour. Got off the off ramp and was waiting at a stop sign when it started knocking REAL LOUD...then it went away till I put it in second gear...then it started knocking again..till it got up to speed...shifted to third and it went away...till the next stop and it started again...so this time I put it in first...and it still did it. I checked the oil and got plenty...and it ran all the way home no problems. And coming into work today no problems. Any ideas? :- :- I sold my Power Choke because of the Cackle...

Re:It just started KNOCKING???

Does the knock stop if you push the clutch pedal? If so it is just the dreaded clutch chatter, for which there is a TSB.

Some of you guys offer TERRIBLE advice. :

As much as I hate going in to the dealership, I'd take it in and have it looked at. That's not normal.

Neutral and cold with clutch out is when my clutch is noisiest. It sounds exactly like an engine knock to the untrained ear.

Re:It just started KNOCKING???

That's a good point. I can't say that I can hear it while in gear and moving. Mine is not as bad as others I have heard and maybe someone else can tell us if they can hear the clutch noise while in gear and moving.
