How could I let this happen?? re: brakes

Pads went on today with no problems. I had some of that brake grease to stop any squeal and used it even though they don't say you need it. The old pads had less than 1/8" left on them! The rears look like new..
Most of my driving is in DC traffic so I'd bet I hit the brake pedal more than I hit the accelerator.
Anyways, brakes work fine and no more noise..
