Help me decide

Hi Guys,

I'm new to the site, but love all the great info on it. I am looking for a new truck (2500 quad cab shortbed) and having trouble deciding between a used '07 5.9 or a new '08 6.7. This truck will be my daily driver/work truck. I usually run between 800-1000 miles a week in a mix of rough const. sites, city and highway driving. Don't tow much, maybe once every 3 months or so. Main reason for going diesel is for mileage and higher resale value. Just wanted to get some options on what ya'll thought. I have read the posts on the 5.9 vs 6.7. I guess the question I am trying to ask is the '08 overall (motor, trans, ride, creature comforts) that much of an improvement over the '07 to justify the extra cost? Any help with my decision making process is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ray

5.9. They are still working the bugs out of the 6.7 and the 68RE hasn't been around long enough to have been proven reliable or not. The rest of the truck is identical to the 07 5.9.

This is a dangerous topic! I was surprised to see your post b/c I didn't think there were many new 07 5.9's left on the dealer lots. Just out of curiosity, are you finding a lot of 5.9's out there with the options you want? I haven't found much around my area but it could be different where you're at.

I'm in a situation where I'm needing to move to 4x4 and am looking for a lightly used 5.9 instead of a new 6.7 to replace my 2007 5.9 4x2. I test drove the 6.7 and it definitely rides great with the 6 speed auto and exhaust break, but I have to be honest...I'm spooked over the emissions stuff. As everyone says though, the people with the problems are the first to come to these forums but it's hard not to get caught up in it.

Regardless of what you get, don't second guess your decision!! If I can't find the right used 5.9 I will get the 6.7 with no regrets.

Higher resale value is great but, does it justify the 6 to 10 thousand dollar difference in initial cost? Maybe.
"Better" mileage...@ an additional 15 to 20 percent higher cost of fuel and the significantly higher cost of maintainence......you have to do some math then decide if diesel is really the way to go, for you. My suburban (gas) gets the same mileage as my Dodge.

IMHO, if you're not pulling something you dont need a diesel.
Now having said that, maybe you just prefer to drive a really nice truck with a kick a$$ motor and its worth the cost!
It's a personal choice, get what you want, the cummins I-6 is a proven warrior, the size (5.9 v 6.7) doesn't matter.
Cheers!

I agree. If I wasn't towing, I would have bought a Power Wagon

The reason I was thinking diesel over gas is because the motors tend to last longer than a gas motor. If I finance a gasser for five years driving an avg. of 40,000 miles a yr. I think I will owe more on the truck than what it is worth. Whereas with a diesel the payments will be higher but the truck should last at least 5 yrs or 200,000 miles. Am I thinking on the right track?

If diesel fuel prices don't stabilize at a reasonable level in relation to regular gas, current diesel trucks will not be worth much down the road, since the supply of used trucks will likely exceed the demand.

thats a very good point tree farm...I paid $3.99 the other day...FWIW I would get the power wagon...throw on some 35's and a mini-pack in the rear and call it my beast!

you're reasoning is logical...but if you're not towing alot I'd go with the gasser...but now that I own a diesel I freaking look for things to tow!

To try and answer the original question, I would go with the 5.9 if I didn't tow or haul much. I believe the 6.7 with the emmissions needs to be worked harder to keep everything operating properly. Also the 6.7 is generally getting lower fuel mileage than the 5.9. Based on the information you gave the 5.9 would be the way to go.

Not sure I agree with the reasoning to go with a diesel to start with since diesel fuel is so much higher in cost than even premium gas at this time.

That said, I love my 6.7. Good luck with what ever you choose.

I dont think 200k is unreasonable to expect out of todays gasoline engines. If well maintained 300k is likely, the body may fall away from rust and corrosion before the motor dies. I just sold a '93 chev (350) with 281k miles on it, original engine and trans.
Figure what you think either truck will be worth in 5 years w/ 200k on it, then figure your cost per 5yrs of ownership
then do the math.
