H46 Recall Notice???

I got a post card from my Dodge dealer today stating that my truck has a recall on it. The recall was listed as H46. Does anyone know what this is??

It is the 2nd sticky at the top of the page!

Lots of reading:

To sum it up, if you installed or had the dealer install the 08 and up upgraded steering linkage package, your truck should be inspected to see what rev. # kit was used. The rev. "E" kit has a faulty tie rod end that could break. If you still have the OEM 05 linkage, the recall does not apply to you. Dodge just issued the recall to every 03 and up truck because it has no way of verifying what linkage is currently on the vehicle without inspecting it.

I have the upgraded linkage, and the recall does apply to me. However I haven't taken it in as they want $100 to remove my aftermarket steering gearbox brace. The truck has never felt better on the road, and I'm scared to let them touch or make any changes.

This doesn't sound right to me. They shouldn't be charging for a recall. I think you may need to take it to a different dealer.

I think it's the "afermarket" part they are whining about. BS, I know, but probably what it is.

I would take off the brace, take it in, and have them do the work with no charge and replace the bracket at home. That recall is for faulty parts in your steering, best to get it changed out IMO.

the dealer does not get paid by the manufacture to remove any aftermarket item to conduct any repairs or recalls. that is where he $100 is coming from.

The bad thing about the parts they are recalling is they are failing with out warning and in a very short time.
Get in there and get it done. I personally don't want a 7000lb truck hurling down the hwy at 70mph and have it plow into me because they didn't get the recall done.

The dealer is charging $100 to remove the 4 bolts that fasten the aftermarket part to my frame.
I will remove it all myself, however I haven't had the time.

I thought the steering gear pit-man arm was ok, but the crossover and tie rod shaft was the cause of failure. So, why do they need to remove the steering bracefor the repair? Or are they replacing the steering gear pit-man arm to?

They replaced the steering gearbox when they first updated the steering linkage at 24000 miles. My 05 went through 3 steering gearbox in 70k miles and I'm on my second one with this 07. I told the dealer that I installed the steering brace to help support the weak steering gearbox that dodge puts on these trucks. Dealer said he had never had any experience with gearbox going out.

See I'm currious, I bought the AE kit in 09 and installed it myself (I do have the stock system) but it sounds like the issue is with the kits the dealer installed (or is that the 36 recall for the other linkage?)

Does anybody know if the kit looks different? Like I said I put the AE kit on and I saw the issue with the other kits AB-AD, but not the AE? And will dodge still take care of it, if I put the kit on? Sucks too cause the truck runs great.

Really wish there were some pictures of the old, and the new. (not styles) but the ones the dealers are replacing of those that had the update (drag link, for drag link)

I am still wondering why they should have to remove the brace to work on the linkage or crossover? Or, are you trying to get them to replace the gear box again while doing the recall?

I did not know that you had so many problems with the gear box on your truck. As I am still on my original gear box that came with my truck which was brand new in 05. I hope to keep that way too. I try to avoid the dealer at all cost and I do most of the work my self. That way I know it is done right and do not have to worry about them trying to make me pay for some other problem that they created. As for safety recalls by NHTA I do let the dealer have a look see, but try to avoid any installation.

Still, the way I read the recall, since I too have received it also; which states that the recall is only looking at the steering tie rods and crossover linkages that have been updated to look like the newer style trucks, and has nothing to do with the drop arm or steering gear box. Even though to remove your brace I should think it would not take more than 10 minutes. Even when taking your time at it to complete the rest of the recall repair.

If I had a choice, I would vote by going to a different dealer. Since Dodge still has to pay them for the repair if needed, so why not voite with your choice service departments. It like taking your money elsewhere when you think your going to get cheated on. I know, I have.

O.K. Here's the deal.

I did remove the steering brace and take the truck in for the recall.
They did put a new pitman arm on, and a new link in the steering linkage, thus the need to remove the aftermarket brace.

As far as the steering dampner, I don't really see anything different, but I didn't really examine the prior set of parts. I'm just looking for new parts that aren't dirty and don't see any. They might have kept the u-bolts and put a metal plate to help clamp it to the track bar but that is all I can tell.
