Can't comment on the automatic S.O., the H.O. 6 speed with the 3.73 is a towing machine. It also does great running empty.

I am starting to think that it is all driven by fuel economy and vehicle speed combined with 'how quick you want to get to' or 'how long you want to maintain' terminal velocity.

Given the HO has the 6 speed tranny and is almost perfectly geared, the 3/4 ton is rated for 20,000 GCWR for either the 3.73 and 4.10, and the HO cummins has a flat torque curve peaked at 555ftLB from 1400 to 2600rpm the rig should maintain speed on most highway grades.

The only reason I can see someone wanting the 4.10 ratio is to be the &quot;first&quot; to get to a destination (the next traffic light, behind the next slow driver, the top of the hill, and so on) as it will aid acceleration and probably hill pulling.

My idea on the theories is this. You have a six speed transmission, if it is too much to handle slow down, take the next lowest gear and enjoy the scenery for a spell.

How fast or quick do you want to be hauling close to 20,000 or even 7500 with precious cargo (horses or other cattle). I just dont get it.

Heck, I slow down even if the road is bumpy on the flat and level let alone if there is a lot of on/off highway traffic.

 

You guys were right the ratio is in the glove box. 3.73's and if it is not on the spec sheet as 4.10 it is the 3.73's. Thanks for all the info. This is my first diesel. Also my first day with my new HO, and boy am I havin fun. My son-in law had fun my son had fun and my father-in law had the most fun. :P

 

I haven't seem anyone mention that if you ever plan to run larger tires than stock, the 4.10s may be the way to go. If I order a new 3500 HO, I would get the 4.10s just for that reason even though I may only tow once a year. <br><br>I would eventually add a modest lift kit and go with 35 - 37 inch tires though so I think I'd be better of with the 4.10s to start with.<br><br>

 

Does anyone know if the Gear Vendors kit from the Gen 2 NV5600 will fit on the newer Gen 3s?? This would allow you to run 4.10s for the extra power and still have awesome MPG since with the Gear Vendors unit engaged and the tranny in OD you would have a combined gear ratio of .57. This would bring the Revs down from 2228 @ 70 to 1739 RPMs with the stock tires. <br><br>Plus it would allow you to have multiple Overdrives (.73 for the stock tranny and the Gear Vendors in 1:1, and .78 with the tranny in direct drive and the Gear Vendors on) for those slight changes in RPMs that will keep you in the torque curve, and still not hurt your MPG.

 

What does everyone think about the auxillary gear vendor transmision on Performance West's Cannonball Express?

 

So I guess that would mean that it will fit the Gen 3 body style if this was done, unless someone knows that they had to custom make a model to fit this single vehicle.

Except for the occasional 16' flatbed, 18' bass boat or 20' four hourse trailer...I tow absolutely nothing probably 99% of the time. Why did I get a diesel you ask?? Because I like the way they sound. ;D

 

The sound sure is sweet! I also like the smell of diesel on a cool morning. Guess there's something wrong with me. :-*

 

Whenever I am asked why I got a diesel I simply answer, because I wanted one. End of discussion. ;D

 

I got my Diesel because I Tow and because I like to see other truck owners turn Green with Envy.
