Fuel, starting out right

I pick up my truck tomorrow and I need to take it on a long trip Saturday... I would HATE to get stuck in the cold.

The truck came from Mexico (winter fuel??, not) and sat in the port of Newark for the last 3 weeks in a balmy 40-50 degrees. Rolled off the truck yesterday to a brisk 10. I assume they'll give it to me with less than 2 gal of fuel.

Is my best bet to head to the major highway (route 9 in Freehold) and buy the first tank at a big station? Add some additive immediately? Then buy an extra fuel filter for the glove box just in case?

Normally I'll garage the truck, but on the weekend trip I'll be parked in hotel parking lots outside in temps dropping to single digits per weather.com...

Congrats on the truck! MY dealer filled the tank for me. I used an additive, more for lubrication then for geling?, gelliing?, you choose.

Dave,

Can't hurt to put an additive in for the first tank, especially with the extreme cold here in the NE.

I believe the truck comes with 8 gallons from the factory, you will see some where on the invoice that they charge you for it so don't get too excited.

Don't get freaked out when you start it in the cold, the volt meter will take a nose dive and the lights will dim, that's OK, it's just the intake heaters doing their thing. Also, expect it to be a little noisy for the first few minutes.....remember it's a diesel.

Go to Geno's garage web site and order their filter kit, I forget,I think it's 3 oil, 2 air and 2 fuel or something like that...great deal. You can wait awhile to order it.

Best of luck !!!

If your dealer doesn't fill it, I'd make a fuss. I believe it is DC's policy to deliver new vehicles full.

THen again, maybe not.

Come to think of it, the salesman did fill the truck after he gave me the keys....but I did pay for the 8 gallons shown on the invoice.

Guess what.

Got the truck, it did come with a full tank and there was a charge on the invoice for "minimum 8 gallons" = $16. I stopped by a parts store to get some antigel and the sales guy said that a lot of folk got stuck around here the last few days.
