Fuel gauge stuck

I have searched the forums for information about this topic and did not find much. I have an 04 2500 with a 5.9l in it. It is my second engine. The most resent problems is my fuel gauge first started going from what I believed the actual level to be, to full while I was driving. But the truck sat all weekend and now it is stuck on empty and the low fuel light is on. It has not moved and again seems stuck, I drove over 50 miles today and no change with gauge. Any help would be great.

Thank you,

You can test the gauge cluster by holding the trip reset button down while you turn the key on, do not start, once the test starts release the button. This will tell you in the gauge is bad or if it is the probably the sending unit.

Snap a pic of the speedo when it pegs and tell everyone your truck goes that fast.

I did the test and everything checked out ok, does that mean it is the sending unit? If so is that located in the tank? And that's a great idea to get a picture of the speedometer when it's pegged out!

It is very likely that it is the sending unit in the tank.

Mine is doing same thing! Going to have to live with it for awhile.

Yeap, sending unit. They are not hard to do, just make sure the tank is about empty or just pull the bed.

So does this mean my fuel pump is going to go out or just a bad sending unit to the gauge.

The fuel pump and gauge sending unit are in the same module if yours has been replaced with the in tank pump. The original pump was on the filter in the '03 and '04 models.

If your pump is not in the tank then the sending unit is not expensive but if it is in the tank then the unit is not cheep. Now would be a good time to go for a Fass or Airdog with additional filteration and go with just a sending unit in the tank.

I believe right after I got the truck the lift pump with out and the dealer moved the pump to the tank, is there a way to check. Also other then the gauge not working should I be worried about the lift pump just stopping or do I have time put some extra money to buy an aftermarket pump system.

I would not worry about the pump just stopping, more than likely you just have sending unit problems.

It is possible to have issues with the wiring going to the sending unit causing this problem. Wouldn't hurt to crawl under the truck and just check over the wiring going to the tank and see if it has been hit or smashed. Wiggle the harness and see if it starts to work again.
