fuel filter

i went to the cummins dealer today to but a fuel filter and also question the white chalkey substance on the outside of the canister that iwas asking about in my other post. Anyway they had a 10 micron fuel filter. which is best for the 04.5 5.9ltr? I know i can get a 7 micron from fleetguard but wouldn't it clog easier?

Thanks!

I would buy the 7 mircon size filter. I believe that some guys are even using a 2 micron filter rating but this is with a by pass set up. The better the filtration the longer your pump and injectors will last. If you are worried about plugging care a spare filter with you. Change this out if and when you sense plugging. I also change my filter every 10K miles, cheap insurance and carry a spare 7 micron filter.

Get a Baldwin #PF7977 filter. It has a 5 micron absolute filtration rating and it's the best filter you can buy that will fit directly in the stock fuel filter canister.

7 is the new OE spec, so run at least a 7.

Bingo!!!

Only 3 filters meet OE spec

OE/Fleetguard/Cummins
Donaldson P550800
Baldwin PF7977 (actually exceeds)

Any other filter won't meet the specs.

Yep.. bypass filters are for oil.

I am running 3 filters on my OE LP, 20um, 5um, 2um and have yet to see below 5.5psi even towing.

Ducman82 03-27-2009 04:34 PM

what do you use for 5um ah64id??

tomm 03-27-2009 04:39 PM

I've been running the Fleetgaurd 7 micron from Genos for $14.95 with no problem. Sure beats the 10 micron at the dealer for $40!

Thanks for this post, it reminded me I'm due to ghange it out.[coffee]

Thanks for the replys... So even though the microns are such a smaller number it has no potential for clogging?

Ducman82 03-27-2009 05:27 PM

well, if you have filters clog that fast, you got some baddddd fuel. but then that also means your injector pumps and injectors are safe and the filters did there job

How many miles do you go before changing the fuel filter?
I just might take it back.
Now for a completly different question... How hard is it to put the amsoil by pass on my 04.5 ?

AH64ID 03-27-2009 06:05 PM

I am probably going to go 20K before changing all 3 filter.. I have yet to see a psi drop from plugging.

Very easy, couple of hours. All you need is the install kit (make sure you get enough hose, probably have to order extra) a drill and a tap.. And if you want to make a skid (depending on where you put it), you'll need some cardboard and a good machine shop.

racemydodge 03-27-2009 07:20 PM

Amsoil bypass for 04.5

What would i need to drill and tap for? For the mount. The kit looks like it has 2 lines, one goes to the oil cap and one goes into the top of factory oil filter mount. Is that all it is? no tapping the pan or the block? How many more quarts of oil will the system hold on the 04.5?
