On the fence

Hello fellas,

I have been absorbing as much as I possibly can from both here and the gmc/chevy sites. My last truck was a 1500 Silverado Gasser. I was one of the guys who had the infamous piston slap and I was NOT happy with the way GM handled my complaint and lack of warranty. I swore I would never own a gasser after that.

Now I am looking hard at the Dodge 2500 QC. I love the 6.7, but I also hate the EPA crap on the back end and what it will no doubt effect any mods I might want to put on it. I am on the fence with the 2500 QC or going all out on the DRW 3500 long bed. I don't pull a lot, just an 18 foot boat and a possible toy carrier for a small car and some ATV's.

My other look is at the GMC 2500 QC Sierra. But I am really leaning to the dodge....

Thoughts?

KAW

I did the same debate a year ago. I always drove Fords but did not want a Ford 6.0 diesel. Could have gone with a BB Ford gasser as that is what I was replacing. Test drove a BB Ford gasser and then test drove the Dodge Cummins. Bought the Dodge. I should have done it years ago when at the same crossroads then. So, like Luvnacumns, Nothing to think about!!!! I absolutely love my Dodge truck. I have not had a single problem with it the past year. I did have a code regarding the rail pressure, but no problems, cleared it and it has not returned. Couple recall things - tank vent and ABS module, taken care of immediately, again no problems. I am very satisfied with the Dodge. I am hoping it will last as many years as my previous Fords have, and so far it is a good running truck, performing up to and exceeding my expectations.

Get off the fence.

Your only question should be 2500, 3500 DRW. The 2500 will tow your boat and darn near anything else, the DRW unless you have to have one for towing heavy, is going to hurt your fuel milage due to the extra weight. I would shoot for the 2500 QC Dodge, or mega cab.

When I first got out of college my first truck was a used 97 powerstroke. One week later, my buddy bought a new 2000 dodge cummins. I immediately fell in love with that truck and knew I made a big mistake. The low end power and torque was amazing compared to the ford. And the sound of the in-line six is music to the ears. I had to wait 2 painful years so I wouldn't lose money on the ford. My advice, buy the dodge now!!!

I've had 2 GM gassers with the new generation engines. I traded one of them in because of the piston slap. When I started looking for a new truck it was between a GMC Duramax or the Dodge Cummins. Drove them both and the Dodge won hands down. I like how the power comes low and just stays throughout the rpm range. I also like the simplicity of the motor. I feel comfortable doing almost all of the work on this truck. The only other truck I felt that way about was the GM gassers. I think the only thing you have to decide is 2500 or 3500, Megacab or Quadcab.

No Brainer, Dodge all the way.
Pop the hood of a Ford or Chev diesel, compare to the Cummins, which would you rather work on?

If ythey have new 06's in your area you should consider that option, especially with a 6 spd manual. If you get an auto and do even the slightest mods be prepared to redo the auto.

Unless you need a dually, (and it doesn't sound like you do), I'd just get it without, they're a pain, to work on, to chnge a flat, on narrow roads or bridges, in parking lots, when you buy tires etc etc. They sure do look cool though!

If you want more than a tiny payload, pick a 3500 series. The 2500 payloads are just too small with the Cummins option.

Keep in mind there is the SRW 3500 also. A little more payload, a little less $$ than a DRW, and better resale than a 2500.

Drive Duramax and Cummins back to back. Then buy which one you like best. Both have great engines and will do what you need. Personally, I would not have a gasser, probably even if I did not pull much of anything. I would get a 5.9 06 or 07 - wouldn't want EGrecirculation, and particulate trap.

I'd stay away from the DWR unless you are doing alot extreme towing (25,000 and up). I tow daily in those ranges with my works 2500. If this is going to be a family vehicle stick to the 2500 a DWR gets annoying when your trying to park it in a parking lot plus look at the cost of 6 tires instead of 4. As for a Dodge 6.7 or the Duramax I'd pick the 5.9 3rd gen and let the 6.7 work out any issues in the first year of production.

This board is most likely not the best place to ask this..as you can imagine most opinions are a little biased.

Speaking for myself only, I am not a "raving" fan of Dodge Quality. This is my first Dodge truck. Saying that, I bought my truck for the motor, which I feel is the best fit for my needs. I have owned all "Big Three" trucks and can say that each have their own good qualities respectively. Ideally, I would meld all three together and have one heck of a truck. Now, in respects to the new Fords, I would hold off until the new product has proven itself for a few years..Buy a Dodge or a Chevy.

Dodge hands down... of course. I think the 2500 is all you need but I would get the Mega Cab once you have that space you will never want anything else.

I love my Megacab! I have too keep myself from putting too many miles on it! I bought it in Oct 2006, and I already have 13.5k miles on it. Nothing against the 6.7, but here are a couple of reasons I would go with the 5.5 Cummins:
- 5.9 is Tried and proven, Dodge has been runnign this engine since 1989.
- Less emissions crap!

Good luck!
