ECM reflash ?

New to the forum and had another simple/stupid question for most. What exactly is the ECM? and reflash? I'm guessing resetting of computer or something of that nature but what does ECM stand for and how or when will one know if they need to have it done?
I only have 1/2 tank of fuel through my truck and it's averaging 15mpg and I was curious as some are getting 17-19 mpg after reflash. I keep the truck rpm's down under 2k for the most part. The way it looks I'll be at 500 miles for this tank and some are getting 600 plus so I'v heard and read. Just curious about the ECM and etc...?
Thanks.

Yes, the ECM is the trucks computer. A reflash is a reloading of it's operating system. Usually with some updates.

I had my 06 reflashed and it seems to have helped everything about it. It has more power, tranny shifts much better (driveability is much better) and the mpg went up some (16 in town, 18 on the road). The old girl has 4800 miles on her.

Give it a little time. It only has about 300 mi., right? Just wait, & if it doesn't change after a few thousand then go that route. I have 6,600 on mine & it keeps getting better!

Is there a specific ID # for the "flash" that you got?

I don't know the #. When I put the bullydog on mine it screwed the ecm up. When they say they are returning back to stock. It's there stock. Not the stock one you had before you downloaded. Now back to the reflash ?. What ever the #, it worked. I wish I could be more help. I will try to dig into it on Monday and see if I can't get the #.
