Cummins Hall of Famers...
This question is for long time Cummins owners or Cummins experts. As I've posted in a few other threads I'm looking heavily into getting a Cummins for my next diesel truck. In fact after chatting with some of the members here they have pretty much sealed the deal for me, but I still have some questions.
First, what is the best all around year(s) for a Cummins? What years are the most reliable all around, from the engine to the accessories...
Second, how do the non-drivetrain parts hold up on these trucks compared to Ford's and Chevy's? I'm referring to the body, interior and exterior accessories (window motors, wipers, door panels, etc...)
Thanks for your help!

I have never owned a diesel truck before my 04.5. It has been awesome and has only been to the shop for a reflash and TSB on the door weatherstripping.
But, reading around on here.........I think the consensus on here is that the 98 12 valve seems to be really popular as the last year of those.
Starting in 98.5 they went to the 24 valve and electronics took over. The 12 valves, as I understand them, are all mechanical and are bulletproof.
They are all very reliable engines, but I hear of problems with the vp44 injection pump on the 2nd gen 24 valves. But that can be fixed with an aftermarket lift pump too.

I believe the 98 12 valves are the holy grail, followed closely by the 2002 24 valves. Overall the Dodge is very comparable to the Ferds and Chebbys as far as overall quality, the engine just seals the deal. You will not be sorry, if that is what you are asking. Ride in all three and see for yourself.
