CP3 pump leaks

Thanks to the collective wisdom of this board I learned that the oil leak I thought I saw was in fact a diesel leak coming from the CP3 pump. I got underneath today for another project and looked closer at the trail of fluid I saw collecting on the grounding post drivers side front of the block. Looking up with a light I could see the trail go up a wiring harness to a bracket and end on the high pressure pump on a bolt that is compressing a gasket... and the fluid is much too thin to be oil, it looks like diesel now that I check it again.

I understand that this is a known problem... that the pump leaks but does not fail or impact performance.... and that DC will replace it if they are sure it's the pump.

I'm at 13 months/21,000 miles... anyone know how long my warranty is on this specific thing? 7/70? or less. Should it be replaced completely free to me? Any special phrases to use to help the service writer know what I need done? I'll call my dealer Monday to set up an appt.

btw - anyone here from Monmouth/Ocean county NJ? Do you know any dealerships who do better (or worse) on the Cummins... I'd hate to turn a minor leak into a major repair by letting the wrong guy tear it apart.

Your injector pump warranty will be 7y/100K. I'm not 100% sure on after the 3/36 if there is a deductable involved I would have to check the book again to be sure. Get it checked soon before 3/36 and labor and parts I know will be 100% payed, unless they determine some sort of aftermarket mod created the problem.

I also have the same issue with the CP3 pump but the leak seems to come and go. Guess I have to watch it for awhile.

Ditto. I had the original replaced last winter. This one seems to leak only when it is extremely cold outside, like in the single digits. I will just have to keep an eye on it for now. DC will not replace it if it only leaks intermittently.

Yep! They must think the diesel fuel fairy left the diesel fuel coating that is always on the bottom of my pump.

yep....

I had a circular conversation with the dealer today.

Basically: my fuel pump leaks, what do you need to see to replace it.?
answer - you need to bring it in.
Of course... but what do you consider a leak?
answer - you need to bring it in
OK... how many days will you have it?
answer - you need to bring it in
Alright... how much longer is this under warranty?
answer - probably 7/70, but don't wait, it's leaking fuel and that's serious!
doh

....ok so I have an appt for Friday. Anything else to make them do while they've got it?
My door seals are OK, the tape on the body panel holes is tacky... maybe I'll ask them to fix that too.

There is a similar thread going on over at TDR. Apparently this is not an isolated problem. Many including myself have the issue. I guess its dealer time as much as I hate to do it. My camshaft sensor is covered with diesel and its only a matter of tiime before the electrical connection is compromised leaving me down on the road some where.

I simply hate leaks. Some I can tolerate. My rocker cover weaps alittle oil when really cold. Major job and not worth the risk of the problems that might arise from the repair. The CP3 replacment is very basic. I won't have a fuel leak... even if it's Diesel. Yes there is a problem with them. Be prepared your dealer will most likely hose everything down with brake clean and let it idle in the lot. That's what they did on mine the first time. "No Problem Found". Mine took about 500 miles to get good and wet. The second time I crawled under the truck with the tech and explained that I couldn't have put that fuel there... RIGHT. Star OK'd that time.

What's "star"?
The more info I have the better off I think I'll be.

I don't like the prospect of making this a multi-trip project though... Dropping the vehicle, being w/o etc stinks. Better now though then later when I need the truck to tow the RV.

Star is the tech line that the shop guys call when they have a problem that they can't figure out, or to order parts that are on order restriction.

Unfortunately, if you have a leaking CP3 it will probably be a multi-trip project. If you have a dealer with a good diesel tech, however, you shouldn't run into the situation that sawboywv1 ran into when he went. There is no reason in the world that the tech couldn't have felt around to see if there was diesel on the bottom of the pump. That kind of nonsense really gives dealers a bad name.

I can see the diesel on the pump by looking up at it from under the engine, it's either coming from the pump - or somthing above that. We'll see. Since it seems this is not a sign of pending catastrophic failure I'm only so concerned. Still, it's fuel being dripped into the engine compartment, that can't be good!

I have good relationship with our local dealer. I have purchased several vehicles from them. They told me it was STAR that was the stumbling block. As a matter of fact there old Diesel Tech is now our Mac tool rep. He said for the most part any Cummins issue is a problem! Lots of calls, lots of hoops to jump thru! Maybe being a small dealership has something to do with it also. They do try. At $2.09 a gallon I want it going thru the motor not down the SIDE!

see my other thread on the hassle of getting this fixed...

making the sad story short, I'm probably driving the truck another week or two with this leak. It's definitely dripping enough to make a couple damp surfaces below the pump - but it's surely not spewing out fuel. The dealer wants me to sign a waiver saying I've been advised the truck is unsafe to drive! It's just a little diesel fuel? Am I being stupid to drive it anyway? It's not like it will explode or something...
