Automatic vs 6 speed

The truck I used to have was an auto. Nuff said. I love the manual over the auto. It's not like you're shifing through all 6 gears anyway.

It's not that the 48re isn't a good automatic. But generally speaking automatics just don't last as long as manuals. And if you plan to keep your truck until you wear out your Cummins you will go through several automatics. If you have a manual you will probably just be replacing clutches.

how can you critisize , when you have no experience
do a little towing with that 48re, then coment, but to tell a guy asking for advice that the auto suxx, without trully using it....
my 2 cents
I like the auto so far I tow about 7,000 TT and it works good. On our hunting trip my buddy lost his manual trans in his 99 ( 100000 miles ) in Idaho and cost him a new trans and clutch for about $3500 at Dave Smiths. Manual trans cost and they brake.
SIGHHHHH (Here we go again).....I put about 250 or 300 miles on mine a day, I tow a fair amount, and occasionally tow big. Towing big, I have never seen the truck get hot, tranny slip, stink, surge or any other maladies normally associated with a failing or weak automatic. Do a search of my posts and you will find more detailed tales on my 48RE experiences. Having said that, it does only have about 33k on it, which as previously stated is pretty young. I do think though that I am running a fairly tough proving ground for the 48RE, and am so far quite pleased with my choice.

I work in the Oilfield, and I mean in the field. I use the truck everyday for all kinds of things, towing a 11,500 30' goose neck trailer loaded with a JD tractor, running muddy roads, gravel roads, start and stopping long idles, so far so good, I can't say how long the Auto will last, but I love it up till now. have 16,000 miles on it bought it in OCT 2003. But to each his own.

The problem being, there will be very little towing especially at first. All the trailer sales people keep telling us to buy a trailer for youeselves, not how you might use it. I have a 40 mile commute to work at 3AM. Now picture rural New England roads at 3AM passing through six townships and only two of them have police oon duty. Now you're sitting atop this big horse with six speeds! It was fun in a pony 5spd S10 w/a 2.2 that couldn't get out of it own way unless you had built up the rpms
All I'm saying here is, I've had a std for yeeeeears. I've had this truck a month. I miss a std and think how much more fun this truck would be to ride if it had a std.

Correct with an Ebrake the 6spd brake really well. Up until now the 48 is not ebrake approved. If the 48 does go ebrake approved (I'm sure it will) did the engineers do enough long term testing on it?? So many questions....so little time.....
