break break....

Just ran CARFAX on 2004 4x4 vehicle I'm looking at.
Carfax history shows three owners:
1--corporate
2--private
3--private (current)

First owner (corporate); owned from 2003 to late-2011. At time of sale (sold to dealer), mileage on Carfax is 234K MILES and was sold by dealer at auction.
Second owner (G.I. in Texas); purchased (2012) and registered with mileage @ 235K miles.
Third owner (another G.I. in Texas); sold and purchased mid-2013. Current owner.

Current owner shows odometer as 107K miles... Either the documentation history is incorrect, or something fishy...
I "believe" current owner to be trustworthy/honest.

Question: is there a way to determine if the engine in the truck is the "original" engine? or, if there has been any odometer tampering?

I'm not sure how you would determine if the engine has been replaced.

There is a procedure to display engine hours from the engine management computer on the odometer. I think it was turn key on, and hold the trip meter reset button in for 6 seconds, or something like that.

ok... kinda bizzare....

Current owner (I believe him) is completely convinced the current odometer mileage is accurate. I don't doubt his belief. However....

1st owner (per car fax) is labeled "corporate". That tells me the truck was either a rental car, or used in a business (oil field, etc). Three or four "DEALER" entries show increasing mileage up to 230K miles (8years..2003-2011).

Then, somewhere between 1st sale and 2nd-3rd (current) owner the Carfax shows mileage "dropped" to ~107K.

Question: Is it possible to "roll back" the odometer over 100K miles? Without some sort of bread-crumb evidence trail?

I dunno, but if it was in corporate service for a windmill company,'railroad or whatever,
I would tend to believe the car fax and dealer records.

If it was serviced by Dodge, I wonder if they would share what they have in their computer system?

I'd also see what it says for engine hours.
