Can't say that I own a truck with a 68 but I drove one the other day and fell in love. I never thought I would want a truck with an auto but the short test drive I did changed my mind. Can't wait for the 2010's to hit the lots- one will end up in my driveway.

It doesn't appear to have much room. I am Dave's NC Dealer/Installer and have had many long talks with him about this. Many of the internals are stamped steel, not cast or machined parts like the 47/48. He has a "mild pressure" box you can add to help capacity a little bit. He has a dual disc converter and a triple disc converter. He made some mention that the truck modulates the lockup to keep it smooth and allows a 30 RPM (I think) "slip" when locking up.

I think it will be a while before we see lots of "upgrades" for this unit. It is very similar to a newer mini van tranny the way it works. Solenoids controlling the shifting, etc, etc.

I always believed an aftermarket converter added to a stock tranny was not a good idea. Guess it depends on which converter?
A good converter, matched to te tranny would be a big improvement.....no?
Is there one?

I had a couple 47res, then a 68re, and now I'm back in a 48re truck. I did not like either 47re, I loved the 68re and didn't really care how much it could handle because I had no plans to make serious power, and now the 48re which I like better than both 47re's. I'd love to put a 68re in my current truck....

Ive got a 48RE now and its great for daily driving. Without mods it not good for pulling, just seems it needs a another gear. I ve got the DTT valve body which helped. I had the six speed 02 before this truck and I guess thats why I have the opinion on trhe 48re. That bieng said, i will be pickin up an 08 dually with the 68 when I get home. I will be doin the MHP tranny tune as soon as I get it too.

47re is no comparison to the 68. Waaay better piece mated to the EB on the
6.7. Very happy so far

Tell ya what. I have never owned a 68RFE implemented truck, but due to the fact that I DO own an '06 with the 48RE that had it's first all out failure at 51K miles and now at 64K is back to giving me slippage issues and still gear hunting, doesn't get up to speed with a load behind it like you would think that it SHOULD for what the truck costs, etc, I think that it is safe to say that there is NO WAY that a 68RFE can be any worse!

This 48RE takes me back to the old Ford E40D days. They are BOTH pure junk which is why I ditched my old 7.3!

I had NO clue that it would be such a weak unit (my fault, I should have researched more). For this transmission to not be able to hold up to a straight STOCK Cummins is unacceptable. I personally feel that the manufacturer should have a failure recall on these jokers with the intent to replace all the CRAP internals with upgraded equipment if and WHEN it falls apart prior to the powertrain warranty running out. And guys, I have NEVER had more than 10K behind my truck (wouldn't trust it to hold from my personal experiences with the truck thus far!). What a waste!
