I have about 3000 miles on my "05 auto and been hand calculating about 13.7 MPG. I sure do hope it gets better.... What I have a hard time with is all the disparity in everyones milage... I was hoping for at least 16 honest MPG's someday !!!

No offence to anyone intended, but when I bought a 7500lb 4wd truck, fuel economy wasn't really a major factor in the decision. Granted 13mpg sucks, 20mpg seems like a fantasy for a truck with any serious bombing done to it, So I just fill it up when the tank gets low and chalk it up as a required expense, besides, Alberta runs on oil and gas revenues, I'm just doing my part to help the economy. If you want economy, buy a hydrid, if you want a vehicle that can do everything, buy a Dodge/Cummins. Just my .02.

arco...with the 315's how are you even calculating mileage?? unless you've had the speedo recalibrated, there's no way (that i know of) to even hand calculate it, and you definitely can't trust the overhead!!

Short answer, NO, you did not make a mistake FYI it was one of the first posts I made on these forums!

Now after 20k miles I'm finally reaping the benefits of the famed Cummins Diesel MPG!

16.8 towing and 18.5-20 avg on highway @70 even with my gears! I found that if you change the fuel filter every oil change your numbers are consistently better!

I haven't towed my Autocross car since I purchased the truck in December, but commuting about 80% highway I'm getting over 20 mph average hand calculated over two tanks of fuel. My truck is stock, plastic intercooler ends and all.

I have taken all the precautions of filling up at the same station, same pump, etc. For these two tanks I ran Power Service Diesel Kleen, but after reading about the actual content of PSD (mostly diesel fuel) I decided I would skip it and see how it does. I'll be filling up in the next few days and it looks like my mpg is going to be the same or a little higher.

In the next couple months I'll hit a few autocrosses and do some low speed towing to help with the break in. Hoping to see my mpg steadily rise another 1 or 2 mpg.

I think the biggest single effect on mpg with the 325/610 is the gearing and resisting putting your foot in it!

your 2wd though and still getting worse milage than his last 04. not sure that is going to be to comforting to him. you should get 20mpg easy.

I haven't even made break-in yet, I'm still under 3000 miles!

There is always a penalty for more power, you'd have to expect a slight decrease in fuel mileage for the added power.

I'm getting 17-18 in town overhead and hand calc. I've also gotten 21-22 the three road trips I've been on going no faster than 65mph (g56 kills me any faster than that). I only have a few thousand on the truck.

Guys, Just got back from a 800 mile trip with about 60 miles of stop and go and idling city traffic. Before I hit the city driving at 60mph I got 23.7 mpg. When I sped up to 67mph I dropped to 20.5mpg. The city dropped it down to 18.4mpg. I drove home at 62 mph and averaged 19.9mpg. That is my best yet for this trip which I do regularly. Warm temps and winter fuel seem to work great in my truck. If you can keep it at less than 1800rpm you get great mileage, under 1900rpm good mileage, under 2000rpm is only acceptable mileage, and passing everything on the road the mileage sucks but the fun factor helps. When I checked at fill up the overhead was within .2 mpg. It would have been right on except for a momentary tst level 2/5 lapse. ks

I still think 04.5+ 4wd trucks are getting worse milage. I have not seen anybody with one that was 4wd that is getting 22mpg or anything.

most every person I see that really likes there milage is 03-04 or 2wd. If you read this thread you will be hard pressed to find anybody with an 04.5+ 4wd raving about milage.

I think the xzt box uses pressure therefore you overhead will be elevated.

I did get the speedo corrected for the bigger tires and then checked it with a GPS I think the big difference is the different gear ratio. With my 04 I was at 1600 rpm going 65 and with the new 06 I'm getting 1900 rpm doing 65

I second that. there is no way you can be turning 65mph@1900rpm with 3.73's. with you tire size 65mph should be at 1700rpm.

here is a gear calculator. type in you tire size. 6th gear is .73
