When to install Edge on new engine?

I have ordered a 2005 dodge with the 610 diesel that the dealer tells me should be in by late December. It is an slt 2500 quad cab with long bed. It will have the big horn package and an auto trany. While waiting for the truck to arrive I have decided to purchase some items that I hope will help the performance of the engine. I asked a local diesel service shop at what mileage it would be best to install the Edge chip. One of the service techs said it would be ok to install as soon as it came off the lot. The other said it would be better to wait several thousand miles before installation. Any thoughts on which would be better? They also recommened the AFE replacement air cleaner. Would this be a good choice? We live in a southwest area with lots of dust.
This will be my 2nd try at owning a diesel pickup. The first was the 6.2 in an 82 chevy. I still have the 82 but the 6.2 was changed out 20 years ago
As a first time poster and soon to be dodge owner I appreciate your help.

Welcome to DTR, Bob! I can't really answer your question, other than to say, I personally would wait a bit on the box until you've got some miles on the clock. But, with that said, I don't have a box on yet, and alot of folks around here that are more knowledgable than me may disagree. The AFE with the Proguard 7 is a good filter, I wouldn't hessitate putting it on. Haven't heard anything bad about it yet. Anyway, I just didn't you to think we're ignoring you! Somebody will get you an answer! Once again, welcome to DTR! -Steve

Bob,

Congrats on the purchase and Welcome!

I would give her a few thousand miles, see if you have any problems with the drivetrain or motor. I waited till I had around 16,000 miles on the clock before the box went on my 03, which has been bulletproof so far.

It seems that there are some problems with leaky injectors on the 600-610's. Once the box is on, you are your own warranty station. Ask your selling dealer about boxes, see if they will do warranty work if they know you have one. My dealer won't touch my truck, but did turn me on to a good diesel shop in Indiana for engine work, (for the locals, I know you are out west) Daves Diesel in Angola IN, Exit 150 off of I-69.

Hopefully Cummins has a handle on the injector issue. I am sure that they are very aware of it, and you probably will NOT have any problems. Run her awhile just to be sure.

As far as air filters, the AFE PG7 is a good one, works great on my truck. Nothing has gotten past it. Also take a look at the ScottyAir III, looks like a good bet too.

Hope this helps! Enjoy the new truck, I know my wife hates mine!

Mike

I put mine on at about 300 miles. 11K miles later, all is well.

I have the two items you are asking about and recommend both. Quality products that do perform well and should last many years with the benefits of improved fuel mileage. I'd say you can install the edge now, but use switch setting 1 (lower power) and break-in as normal.

How much hp/torque does the lowest setting produce on an Edge EZ? How much does it raise rail pressure on this setting over stock?

Edge says level one will give 25 hp & 50 torque - you'd have to push the pedal half way or more to see that power. Rail pressure is not listed.

I sure appreciate the advice that everyone has taken the time to give me. This will very likely be the last pickup that I will be purchasing (retirement truck) so I want to be careful and take good care of it. The hard part now is waiting to get ahold of the beast and start driving it! Thanks again.
