valve springs for 3 gen
Keeping on the subject here.
Anytime you increase rpms you will stand a better chance of the oem springs not being able to keep up with the increase and when that happens you start making way too much contact with all moving valve train components ,valve stems, and the cam and that .0001 of an inch can be catastrophic to your valve train and when that happens you may drop a valve and there goes the motor.
On the other hand if your springs are too strong they will force premature wear and tear on your valve train, which will again probably cause engine to go bye bye.
If you have to result to shimming a oem valve spring you are again asking something to do what it was not made to do,result engine go boom.If you are planning on increasing the lift/duration of your cam you "NEED" to go with the right height, right tension,of the valve springs.Shimming a oem spring while running an oem cam will do two things.Put undo pressure on all valve train components, plus the cam that where not made to with stand the increase of extra pressure and with the higher rpms go the better chance of valve train bounce you get and that my friend will destroy anything and everything it touches.
I am a firm believer in building an engine for the future, you may be happy with 400 HP today, next week 500 is not enough, next month 1000 is getting close.Build it right the first time, build for the future, and look at all the money you will save by replacing parts that can't keep up.Anytime you improve one performance part that will have an adverse effect on something else.If you are looking to increase your rpms, well you need all the things that will be effected by the part,or that action.Bigger inflow has to have a bigger outflow or you wasted you money.More rpms needs bigger inflow and outflow and fuel or you wasted your money.
Just look at our new trucks,if you add over 100 rwhp you have to up grade your auto tranny. That will be my first mod on my Mega Cab.Do the tranny to withstand 1000 HP,1500 lbs TQ and then I can do anything I want to do to the motor. In the meantime I'm buying parts to stock pile until I can get my tranny done.May just take it to TST and let them do it all at once.Don't know yet,but it will be in the next couple months.
Now off topic.
In reference to my 69 Dodge. It was a Coronet 440 R/T light weight body with the 426 CID RamCharger engine "IE Hodges Dodges".It had all the appearances of the street Hemi, black valves covers, inline duels, which were much bigger than the oem versions,Hooker 2x44s. Had the ram induction hood scoops, duck tail fin and all the pimped out stuff we had back in those days,SS Cragers with GY redlines.Ran GY wrinkle walls at the strip, ran in the 10s.If you had that combo today with all the increased air flow data that engine would have been putting out 200 more horses and been in the low 9s or high 8s.No do not have the old digger, that thing went to nitro heaven in 68,they tried to put the then new 500 KB Hemi on it and it twisted the frame
.
Pimped out, yell right, the only options were am radio, heater, power steering, and brakes. Not like today, none of these kids even know what a roll up window is.You are right about my age.66.But still drag and road race, have a 500 Arctic Cat,360 Kaw,700 CFX,and a really super bad **** 450 RMZR Zuk.Only thing that can catch me offroad is Superman.the Lone Rangers silver bullets, and a radio. Not real sure about those bullets.
Only thing I have going right now in the works is a mopar sb 408 with 8.8 cr JE pistons and a Wieand 871,going to start out with a .25 overdrive and see how that does.Well maybe that project will get the final touches, maybe not,as it seems as I have a little dose cancer and a bunch of RA and OA.

Even a little sickness we have in common, I was just diagnosed with a positve test for autoimmune disease (some common associates are Mutiple Sclerosis and Lupus) and I am 35
I am not sure Superman could catch you off road from the sound of it
That poor digger, ya gotta love nitro
And ok on the Coronet, you had me scratching my head on that one. I might have missed what your 408 SB Ma Mopar is going in? And back on topic, whew, I was wondering if someone was going to chime in and "get my back"
Too bad you and I don't live closer, sounds like we could kick back and share a few "back in the day" stories. My Dad can not remember the name of the car, but the owner/driver name was Vern Gilpin. They went up against Sox, Jenkins, Glidden and those guys (never won a round against any of them though) and they qualified for the Gatornationals, and went rounds at the Gator's is the best showing they had. It was a small operaton, privately funded, no sponsorship. Just a few guys got together, put together a car to run against the big boys and have some fun.
wwwwwhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Wes didn't you say you where trading at old 12v for a 6.0 powerjoke? wwwhaaaaaaaaa
