Unhappy The trouble with fueling moduals . . . .

Its been awhile since I've posted on here, but I thought I would tell the forum about my lattest experience with a fueling box. As some of you may remember, the first box I had lasted about 20k miles before it decided to take a dump during a vacation a couple of years back. I told the forum about that problem and switched to a box from a different manufacturer. The new one ran great until a few weeks ago. We were again on vacation, this time in Colorado. I had it on the lowest setting when all of a sudden the CEL came on and the engine started clattering like an old time diesel. It also lost most, but not all power. Turning the box "off" did not help. I managed to nurse it a few miles until I could safely get off the road. I was again nowhere near any diesel garage so I was on my own to get it fixed. I was able to get the box out of the system, but it was not fun working on a hot engine. Thankfully, that fixed the problem and it does not look like anything else was damaged. The truck ran great the rest of the trip back to Florida.

Moral of the story is NOT to bash either of the boxes! They both appeared to be well made, produced great power and made the truck more fun to drive. But . . . they are not OEM quality. I have decided that for me and the way I use my truck, reliability is much more important than the additional power. I will not try to get a replacement box nor switch to a third manufacturer. The truck now has 72k on it and I plan on putting a lot more!

I will not presume to tell anyone else what they should do. I'm only passing on my experiences which you may want to consider when making your decision.

The Boss Hog . . . .stock and loving it

Boss,
I agree....from what I've read; no actual experience with go-fast-goodies.

Reliability and longevity is of utmost importance to me. The '06 has more than enough power for what ever I intend to do with the truck. BTW, I do haul a boat, 3 out of 4 weekends, and will buy a slide-in camper in ~2 years.

In the 4 weeks I've had the truck, I've logged ~2800 miles!

Tony

Might I suggest running a downloader then. There are no parts to fail. Seeing as you're almost out of warranty I don't think it will be a big deal.

JCLeary,
Tempting . . . . but right now I think I'll stay stock.

MikeyB, 8mpg,
I deliberately did not state the name of the boxes because 1.) I did not want to get into a urinating contest and 2.) the moral of the story had to do with the chances you take when you mod your truck and not with any inherent problems with a couple of manufacturers. I would like to leave it at that.

Cool

Some people prefer RELIABILITY to performance. I am also not sold on the boxes that alter fueling rail pressures. However I pull a 14500 # fiver and could use a little more power to get up the hills. I wish they made a 25-30 hp chip that was around $ 100.00.

My suggestion for you guys who want total reliability with no power boxes. Go with a set of mild 50-75hp injectors. A little expensive sure, but you would have the power all the time, temps aren't crazy, and would last as long as the oem equipment. Since I had mine installed, I rarely have the BDPP downloaded, and drive around 90% of the time with the Edge off or at Lev.1, and my temps are unchanged in my app. from stock. And one additional bennifit I have noticed is the 305/555 I have now runs as quiet if not more so than the 600's.

I agree with going with some better injectors and maybe even a better turbo. That is, if you even need more power. If your truck pulls fine then leave it stock. We won't put you down for it.

That is unless you are offline! Then we will hammer you for it!!!!

Stock

I also agree. Keep the truck stock if you want the ultimate reliability. Modding these beasts is not for everyone. It WILL take some money and addtl. time to pursue this passion. Of course, reliability -can- be sacrificed. This is no condemnation of any product, but the boxes in general will add addtl. wires, harnesses, etc. to an already very complex design. By the time you are done with fuel mods, gauges and addtl. boxes, you have 47 miles of extra wires and such.

On the other hand, you will miss the addtl. power. It sure is nice to mess with a nice and new SUV that just can get away even though they are at redline and you are just crusing away from a light. Priceless........

I understand but I was just hoping for a warning. Its not a pissing match here (or shouldnt be) I like to hear personal stories of boxes and isses that may arrise from them. Helps me decide what I want to buy. My buddy had problems with his quad box and I have read a couple other stories. Doesnt mean its a bad box (they definatly stand behind their product and have great customer service) but it is nice to know what could go wrong with what product.

I like the idea of injectors. If you think about it, juice w/ attitude or TST is $900. Injectors are only a couple hundred more. I have been reading more and more about injectors and plan on them in the future.

id have to imagine that there are more than a couple of folks on here that have gone overboard with their trucks and later regret it.it is no fun to you or your pocketbook when things start going south.and as you mentioned, you are usually on your own when things start heading south..........but,,you have to admit,it sure is fun!........................bama

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...ight=edge+code

Any box manufacture can have an issue whether it is an electronics problem or an installation problem.

I am not sure why certain people love to point us out? We have very few issues at least percentage wise. I read about other people having problems and getting codes on a regular basis, but it seems ok with everyone?

Think about cell phones, radios, tv's.......anything can have an issue and that is why they have a warranty. That is why your truck has a warranty.

I know you are not directing stuff at me, it just seems like if 1 guy had an issue 10 months ago then we have "problems". If 10 guys with an Edge get codes, then it is just a wiring problem or something else. I don't get the mentality?
